cypsiman2: I still believe in my dreams (Haseo/Atoli)
So, I watched the latest trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3D, and there's this one bit near the end that really caught my attention.

Spoilers within )

So, my brain is doing its own thing, wandering from one thing to another, and it decides to stop on the animated movie "Cats Don't Dance". Specifically, the bit during the ending where they show all the movies that all the animal characters get to be in once institutionalized fantastic racism is defeated forever and ever, and one of them is of the turtle character in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". At the time when I saw it, that stood out as weird to me, because the characters were already turtles, so what was the point?

And then it hit me; the CHARACTERS were turtles...but the ACTORS were humans in suits! Which, in a world of walking talking animals as metaphors for racism, would make this the equivalent of yellow-face and the like.

Seriously, my brain; so strange and bizarre a place to be, you have no idea.

This super sentai series was pretty much conceived as a tribute to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, though the similarities mostly correspond to the heroes' characterizations and the bird motif of their outfits.  It is also regarded as one of, if not the best Super Sentai series ever conceived.

As is typical, it's just a bit overhyped. )

Inside a human body, a mysterious power is hidden. With training and discipline, this infinite power can be obtained.

This power is called Aura Power, and is used by the Hikari Sentai Maskmen in their battles against the evil underground empire, Tube!

Tube? Seriously, that was the best name they could come up with for the evil empire that year? )

According to commercials I've just seen, Hailee Steinfeld, the lead of True Grit, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Mattie, while Jeff Bridges was nominated for Best Actor in his supporting role as Rooster Cogburn. This is a load, to put it mildly; Not only was Hailee Steinfeld marvelously acted and impeccably well written, but she was far more of a protagonist than you get with most male leads in most movies, who are content to react to everything, have it all spelled out for them, and generally get dragged along by the ear to fulfill their designated lead duties. Mattie? Every step of the way, she is pushing, forcing, and driving the plot and being damn badass all the while. But no, the academy can't recognize her as the lead, because that would be counter to all our preconceptions about how these sorts of things work. Never mind that at the very least, the only reason I was even interested in seeing this movie was because it was about Mattie, and not Rooster. So, as the subject line says, I am outraged.

On a whim, I went to the Original Fiction Mary-Sue Litmus Test (found here, http://www.ponylandpress.com/ms-test.html), and put Yuugi from Yugioh, Judai from Yugioh GX, and Yusei from Yugioh 5Ds through it. The results?

Yuugi: 40, which marks him as a Gary-Stu.

Judai: 75, which marks him as an Irredeemable-Stu

Yusei: 79, same as Judai.

Now, I've never cared much for these sorts of tests, as the answers are all in isolation without any sort of context, and the scale on the scores is just really incredibly strict, you can have maybe one or two significant traits on the character before it starts calling it a sue/stu. But even so, I think that these results are rather telling. And this is just on the universal test, I'm pretty sure that if I were to find a more specific test, like one for Anime in general, or even the Yugioh franchise in particular, the results would be even more glaring. Just a bit of fluff for thought.

I'm going to be short and to the point; Yugioh R may be glorified fanfic, but it is awesome glorified fanfic, and very nearly gives me everything I wanted from it, though there were few things I wish had happened. I do not begrudge the author for not indulging me in these matters though, as he is writing for a general audience and not just for me. Of course, now that the only true spin-off that features the original characters is over, all I have left to enjoy in the realm of Yugioh is the GX manga. True, I am feeling quite cathartic when it comes to my hatewatch of the GX anime, but that's not the same thing.

Well, not too long ago, the summaries for episodes 98 through 100 of 5Ds were released.  Since we now have 100 episodes of 5ds to work with, I figured I'd do a little itty-bitty study; take a look at how the duels throughout all three animes were distributed.

Note that this is setting aside the issue of who wins and how often )

So, as I mentioned in my previous post, I've been reading two shonen series lately; Fairy Tail, which has been a lot of a lot of fun and one which I look forward to reading for however long it runs...and then there's the other one, Katekyo Hitman Reborn.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn, not so fun shonen. And spoilers. )

Well, that's the two series I've been reading lately, I hope this has been informative for you all out there.

Under the advice of a good friend of mine ([profile] angelchan_2004 ), I've decided to talk more about my gaming habits then is the norm for me on this journal, and while there were many fine franchises available to discuss, she resolved that issue by picking the Shin Megami Tensei (hereafter SMT) games. I'll use this post to talk about Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES

Aside from being a mouthful, what is this game about? )

First meme, name a fandom and I'll give you three unpopular opinions of mine about that fandom.

Second meme, ask for my top five fannish whatevers; characters, plot devices, you name it I'll provide it.

Third meme, name a topic, I'll devote at least 100 words to it.

Note that you don't have to do all of them, just the ones that you want.

You can ask about my thoughts on anything!  Yes, even Yaoi, though I'm not averse to some chatting about feminism either.  Fandom related stuff is good too, but like I said, anything!
