It really is an interesting thing, seeing something deliberately fail so badly; you'd imagine that they'd get it right on occasion, just by accident, but nope. Never do.

Yeah, I'm remembering stuff like Malik's Five-card God Combo with Osiris, Ryota's Sea Stealth, Rishid's traps and Sekhmet...but in GX, they're so eager to get everything over and done with so quick, that there's rarely any time to get a good tempo or pattern set up. And yes, definitely better tension and attachment to the characters is a huge plus too.
