Another Kingdom Hearts fic!
“Have I…really always been here?” Ventus stared at the sunset as he sat at the edge of the cliff at the boundary of The Land of Departure. It had been about a week since he’d awoken from his coma, and he was still feeling rather morose. He felt pretty bad about that, since everyone there seemed to constantly worry about him. There was Master Xehanort, who somehow seemed scared to face him, so he didn’t see him that often. Then there was Master Eraqus, and while he was definitely a reliable presence, there was still that same sense of distance that he got from Master Xehanort, so he really didn’t feel much of a connection with him either. There was also Terra…unlike the masters, he was only a few years older than him, and a lot more exuberant than the masters; when he showed off his prowess with the keyblade, it almost made him want to summon his own so that he could do the same, but for whatever reason, it didn’t click, and he felt bad about that too. And finally, there was…
“You must have!” Aqua’s voice…Ventus had trouble describing it. It was…at times calm and husky, and yet at moments like this, she injected an unexpected degree of emotion into it. If he’d had more awareness, more experience, more memories, he’d notice the pattern to it, and possibly its significance. Ventus turned his head, looking away from the sunset, and saw Aqua holding her hand out to him. “After all, I can’t imagine what it would be like here without you.” That smile on her face, Ventus had no idea what do about it. She clearly thought a lot of him, but he had no idea why, and that scared him a little.
“Aqua, what do you mean? I, I don’t remember ever doing anything that important.” Or for that matter, anything at all.
“You woke up. I asked you to wake up, and you did. That means a lot to me, Ven.” That smile just kept getting warmer and warmer to Ventus, like a blanket wrapping itself around him.
“Ven?” He looked at Aqua confusedly, and then… “Why did you call me Ven?”
“You don’t like it?” Her eyes looked a bit sad, and something inside Ventus leaped up, demanding to be heard.
“No!” Ventus was shocked by his own exclamation. “I mean, I do like it, it just…it feels familiar somehow. Like, it’s part of a memory I don’t remember, or something like that.” His brow became furrowed as he tried to puzzle out his own musings, and then…
“You shouldn’t worry so much Ven.” Aqua put her hand on his head, and rubbed his hair. “I think you’d look much better with a smile than a frown; you’ve got just the right face for it.”
“Really?” Ventus said excitedly, and he realized that his lips were pulled back and up into a smile. It felt so easy, now that he’d done it. “I guess you’re right.” He said with a laugh as Aqua took her hand off his head, and offered it back to him.
“Come on, I’ve got some Keyblade tricks I’d like to show you.”
“Okay!” Ventus took Aqua’s hand, and while he did, he couldn’t find it in him to worry about whatever had happened before he came to The Land of Departure.
