Really, writers should all hope for a sort of middle-ground: popular enough to sell well, but not enough to have to worry about adaptions screwing up their original storylines. Though over here it's probably easier, since so few sf/fantasy movies are made in general. It's probably not a balance a mangaka can aspire to, though- if you've made it into the serial magazine, then you stand a good chance of getting an anime.

When the publishers try to edit your original book out of recognition, though, then sadly, you're probably in much hotter water.

*cries* You know, I want to professionally publish fantasy novels one day- this sort of talk is very disheartening.

I hope you don't mind if I ask for some advice? I've been wanting to read/watch some scifi, but I really have no idea where to start looking- I'd be very grateful for recommendations of novels/series with interesting characters!
