cypsiman2: I still believe in my dreams (Your writing is bad)

Where I rewatch Yugioh GX, Episode 70

I will not be broken, I will not be broken, I will not be broken...okay, deep breath, you can do this...So. We open with Manjoume barging into Obelisk Blue, all the Obelisk Blues are all WTF, and Manjoume declares that he's going to make everyone wear white and join the Society of Light. Don't know why they're showing a bunch of Hallmark angels, Obelisk Blues proclaim their pride in the elite blue, and Manjoume proclaims that the Society of Light will shake the world, and now we see Saiou poised demonically over the whole world. Subtle, like a brick to the face. Blah blah blah, Manjoume challenges them all to a duel, the Obelisk Blues laugh him off, Manjoume proclaims that their wheel of fate has begun to turn, and now we see Saiou's aura right behind Manjoume. Huge motherfucking explosions, as Manjoume once more demonstrates his ability to sweep through countless mooks nigh on effortlessly. Also, Why the fuck did Manjoume wait until now to do all this? Why the fuck didn't he take over Obelisk Blue before Judai got his lazy ass back to Duel Academia? Oh, right, because the plot says so.

TITLE SCREEN! ASUKA VS. MANJOUME WHITE THUNDER lord satan, if you would but unmake this episode, i will build many churches in your honor.

Umm, okay, apparently Chronos has taken to narrating his own actions, and hitting some manner of pointer against the wall as he walks by. Why? Fuck if I know. Anyway, Chronos enters the classroom, and is shocked to find that there are no Obelisk Blue students at all. Thank you for this disturbing imagery show, it's most appreciated. And now over with Asuka, Junko, and Momoe, who've apparently just gotten back to Obelisk Blue after dealing with that Osiris Red bullshit...oh, and Judai, Shouk, and Kenzan are there too. Seriously, why are they even bringing Junko and Momoe back for this episode? It's not like they ever contribute anything to, well, anything! And apparently in a matter of hours, at best, the entirety of Obelisk Blue has been painted bright white. Hey, if buildings can be constructed in a matter of minutes, why can't they be painted in seconds? GASP, FUBUKI IS DOWN! MANJOUME, YOU MONSTER, YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS! So Asuka runs up to her brother and asks if he's okay. He says that he tried to stop Manjoume and his goons from painting the dorm white, and now we see Manjoume is being carried on a palanquin, and yes, he's got everyone wearing white. Oh, and now Manjoume is insisting on being called Manjoume White Thunder. Seriously, guys, all this talk of White just makes me think of the Happy-Happy cult from Earthbound. Not exactly scary shit. I mean, you don't need to keep pointing out the whole 'white' theme, its a visual theme, the audience will catch on to it just fine.

Chanting from the goons, Manjoume proclaims that Saiou has ordered him to dye the school white, and everyone's all 'wait, isn't Saiou Edo's manager', and Judai still hasn't figured out that this is the evil bad-wrong Hippy Space Light that he's supposed to stop. Blah blah blah, Manjoume proclaims that Saiou will take over the world (OF COURSE!), and Judai asks if Manjoume's okay, he hasn't hit his head recently and gone onto any trips into Hippy Space, has he? Manjoume is shocked that his mad ranting has resulted in Judai questioning his mental health, and says that they're the ones who aren't okay, they're not even wearing any tinfoil hats! Manjoume wants a duel, Judai accepts, but Asuka interrupts! Asuka points out that this is an Obelisk Blue issue, she'll take care of it. Junko and Momoe asks to go forward in Asuka-Sama's place, but Asuka is not one to let others fight her battles for her, and Fubuki warns her that Manjoume managed to beat everyone else in Obelisk Blue. But Asuka is not to be intimidated, and so Manjoume accepts. Why do I get an ominous feeling about this? Judai gave up that duel way too fucking easy...probably because he read ahead in the script, the lousy shit-fucker.

So, back in the White Room of Mystery...which I thought was abandoned back in episode 68, but as we've established, continuity is for losers. Anyway, Saiou's messing around with his Tarot cards, he goes over how Judai defeated Edo like we're a bunch of morons who can't remember the trite events of two episodes ago, and then a card falls off of the table. It is the Hierophant, which is the symbol of guidance. This somehow convinces Saiou that it is Judai he needs and not Edo, even though it should make him question whether his cards are working at all. Welp, back to Duel Academia, and I brace myself for the duel, oh lord do I brace myself...Manjoume tells Asuka to accept the white, so that she can see the truth of things, and Asuka tells him off, asking him what the hell he thinks he can see. Manjoume declares that he can see people's fates, blah blah blah, bullshit fatalism is bullshit, and god, Asuka, just keep talking, show that dolt Manjoume what for, please, I beg of you, defy the script and show him what for! The goons chant, Asuka says she'll wake Manjoume up from his stupidity, and now the duel begins.

Manjoume goes first, and he activates the permanent spell card Hell's White, causing him to reveal his hand to Asuka. He goes on about how the Society of Light has no shadow and nothing to hide, and Asuka realizes that this has to be a trap of some kind. Manjoume summons Armed Dragon Level 3, and then he sets Cyclone to end his turn. Shut up Kenzan, no one asked you. Shou, you shut up too, Manjoume's obviously not revealing his hand for shits and giggles. Fubuki, you get a pass because you make me laugh. Shut the hell up Judai, you're the worst one of all. Fubuki, keep calling Judai naive, it makes my heart sing. Asuka's turn, and now Hell's White's other effect activates; during the opponent's standby phase, they take 600 points of damage. Ouch. Asuka summons Cyber Tutu, and then equips her with Angel Wing. She wonders why Manjoume doesn't use Cyclone to destroy Angel Wing, but she goes ahead and attacks anyway, since she knows he has nothing else up his sleeves. Cyber Tutu attacks directly for 1000 points of damage, and what the fuck was with that weak kick, that was nothing like the devastating strike to the chest used back in the duel against Titan. And now Angel Wing's effect activates, inflicting an additional 300 points of damage...that's a rather shitty card. Why the fuck would you give an awesome character like Asuka a shitty card like that? Oh, right, because the writers have tuna for brains.

Now Asuka sets two cards to end her turn, and now Manjoume proclaims that he'll be destroying that annoying trap card, and so he activates Cyclone to target the card on the right, Holy Life Barrier. However, Asuka has no problem with this, since her other trap card, Pure Pupil, will destroy Armed Dragon Level 3 when it tries to evolve into Armed Dragon Level 5. Thus, Manjoume's so called 'light' has misled him as to which card he should have destroyed. Manjoume's turn, he draws a card, but he doesn't use Armed Dragon Level 3's effect. Manjoume declares that he knew full well that Asuka was planning to use Pure Pupil to counter his monster's effect...that's right. Manjoume's pulling a Pegasus. For this episode only. Becasue this is the only way for Manjoume to...okay, deep cleansing breath, deep cleansing breath...Manjoume goes on about how the 'light' shines on everything, poor and inept use of symbolism and imagery, and Saiou, because why the fuck not.

EYECATCH!

Pointless banter from the peanut gallery, Fubuki says that what they do know is that Manjoume has managed to shake Asuka psychologically, expertly analyzing the full extent of the effect that Manjoume achieved by showing his hand. And now Manjoume plays his spell card Level Down, letting him summon Armed Dragon Level 5 from his hand without sacrifice. Armed Dragon Level 5 attacks Cyber Tutu for 1400 points of damage, Angel Wing's other effect activates to let Asuka draw a card, which still leaves it a shitty card. And you know what, this episode so horrific that this music cue is actually appropriate to it. And so Armed Dragon Level 3 attacks directly for 1200 damage, leaving Asuka with just 800 life points. And now Manjoume has lost Fubuki's approval, which permanently places him on the shit list, forever. And now we find out that Pure Pupil requires that Asuka control a monster with 1000 attack points or less to activate its effect, so now Manjoume gets to activate Armed Dragon Level 5's effect without issue, sacrificing it to special summon Armed Dragon Level 7, with 2800 attack points. The goons cheer for Manjoume, and Manjoume ends his turn.

Things are looking mighty grim, Asuka still got that fierce determination going on, and then Fubuki yells out to his sister! He knows that she is stronger then any fate, that when he went missing she came to Duel Academia to find him on her own, her strong will can explore fate to its utmost, and she is his pride! And it is official, Fubuki is now second best character on the entire fucking show, with Asuka as first best, just like Fubuki would want it. How such a great little speech made its way into such a terrible episode...but I get ahead of myself. Oh, shut the fuck up Shou and Kenzan, you two little shits have no fucking right complaining about Fubuki being embarrassing after spending the entire season worshiping Judai and licking his feet like the pathetic toadies you are. Shou and Kenzan are now officially the worst characters in the entire series, as well they should be. Judai, acknowledging the awesome that is Fubuki will not save you, you'd respond the same way to a ladybug flitting about the flowers. Asuka thanks her brother, and sets about creating her own fate! She draws her card, Hell's White inflicts 600 damage, leaving her with just 200 life points. She plays Pot of Greed, summons Cyber Petit Angel to add Machine Angel Ritual to her hand, and she activates it, sacrificing Cyuber Petit Angel and Cyber Prima to Ritual Summon Cyber Angel Dakini. Manjoume now gets to choose which monster of his gets destroyed, so of course he goes for Armed Dragon Level 3. And now...Asuka sets two cards to end her turn...huh?

Did...did the writers just forget that Hell's White will still inflict damage on Asuka's next turn? Maybe one of her face-down cards will do the trick...according to Asuka, she's accepted that she may not be able to win this match, but if Manjoume attacks, she'll activate Double Passe, causing both of their life point totals to hit zero at the same time, forcing a draw. And if he activates Armed Dragon Level 7's effect, she'll activate Angel Blast to negate and destroy it. Thus, Asuka has set her two possible fates...or Manjoume just ends his turn and lets Hell's White finish Asuka off. Seriously, did the writers just fucking forget that that card will still do damage? I guess. Also, were I to have been writing this duel, Asuka would have played Fusion to summon Cyber Blader, and since there are two monsters on Manjoume's side of the field, her attack power would double to 4200, which would let her attack and destroy Armed Dragon Level 3 for 3000 points of damage, winning her the match. Plus, this would form a nice parallel to Asuka's duel against Titan. But of course, meaningful parallels and references have no fucking place on this show, amirite?

Blah blah blah, more fatalism nonsense from Manjoume, Asuka denies his bullshit, Nietzsche would be proud of Asuka and that's damn high praise as far as I'm concerned, and more bullshit from Manjoume. Seriously, enough of the stupid pseudo-philosophy Manjoume, just win this rigged duel, it's the only kind of duel you can win at this point you twit. Manjoume's turn, he plays Magical Mallet, returning his two other cards in his hand to his deck to draw two new cards, and what do you know, one of them's Armed Dragon Level Ten. No Asuka, he's winning because the writers rigged this duel in his favor. In a fair match, you would have kicked his ass far, far, far away. So Manjoume sacrifices Level 7 to summon Level 10, and then he equips it with White Veil. Yep, the writers really did forget the whole damage clause of White's Hell. Fuck those fucking fuckers. Fuck, here it comes, fuck, fuck, fuck...Manjoume declares his attack, White Veil negates and destroys all of Asuka's face-down cards, and have I mentioned that today's duel has been brought to you by the sexist douche-bags who are still bitter about those mean girls from High School? Because it is.

Asuka loses, she collapses, everyone runs up to her, Manjoume's still going on about his fatalism bullshit, and if Nietzsche could rise from his grave and box Manjoume's ears in, I would be fucking ecstatic. Fubuki says that Asuka is still his pride, shut the fuck up Judai, and yep, Asuka's been brainwashed. And of course, Judai's still an oblivious dolt who hasn't figured out that this is the Hippy Space Light that he's supposed to be fighting. Of course.

...

...

...

NEXT TIME! Blah blah blah, Judai's going to duel some Society of Light punk who's obsessed with the gradius games, coincidentally made by Konami which also makes the real life card game. Wow, what a shock. EPISODE TITLE! VS. GAME CHAMP! B.E.S. TETRAN TAKE OFF card of the week is Armed Dragon Level 10, confirming that I know exactly where I am.

But really, what do you expect of an episode which dares to try and claim that Asuka and Fubuki are wrong? Really, what were these diseased, rhesus-monkey writers thinking? Oh, right, THEY WEREN'T!

[identity profile] koi-no-soshan.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'd been thinking of trying out episode one of Princess Tutu tonight, but then I saw the enraged capslock on my f-list and decided that it could wait til tomorrow. *hugs*

This has little to do with anything, but for some reason when I searched for the episode all I saw was a raw version. Not that I mind, I only search for subs at all most of the time because raws are so rare on youtube, but... Odd.

I miss the Manjoume who was Manjoume before this pod person took over.

Asuka and Fubuki are clearly the only ones here with any intelligence. And pod!Manjoume, don't you dare bitch at the people who bother to use honorifics, save that for Juudai.

Wow, for one tiny moment, Momoe and Junko actually sounded serious. Damn it, why can't they be like this more often? I'm fine with girly girls, but let them have some character, damn it! As it is, they seem to exist solely as Asuka's almost-never-present harem.

That kick was pathetic. I suppose now that he's a pod person, the writers like Manjoume enough to coddle him? Or they just dislike Asuka that much, I'm not sure which. It could be both.

Asuka, why do you keep striking that pose? It looks nice, sure, but this is not Sailor Moon, you know! Then again, I bet Asuka wishes she could be in Sailor Moon. Revealing skirts or not, the costumes are still more comfortable than her uniform, and at least there the girls were allowed to DO things.

Aww, Fubuki *hugs*

AWW, FUBUKI! *HUGS*

Damn it, Kenzan, Shou, stop trying to ruin the moment! How the hell is an older brother being proud of his younger sister embarrassing, you little prats? I mean, 'hazukashii'? What the hell? Junko and Momoe have the right reaction for anyone who's not Asuka, follow their example!

Eek, this episode is making me curse quite a bit.

Ganbatte, Asuka!

Damn it, how can these writers waste such an awesome character like this? I suppose she committed a double crime- not only being female but a good strategist, anathema in this series.

Speaking of strategists hated by the writers, why the heck isn't Misawa here? Argh, this is such lazy writing, I can't even say, I just... *RAGES*

You know, Sailor Moon (at least the manga, I don't know about the anime), like other sensible fantasy series, had the idea that both light and darkness are necessary parts of the world, and that we have to live with both. WHAT ABOUT THAT CONCEPT IS SO HARD FOR THESE PEOPLE?

"This is...the light of truth..."

*RAGE* *RAGE* *HATE* *HATE*

DAMN IT ALL, I THINK THIS SERIES JUST HIT ROCK BOTTOM. IT'S ONE THING FOR SHOUNEN TO BE LOW ON FEMALE CHARACTERS, EVEN TO HAVE ISSUES WITH GIVING THEM PROPER ROLES IN THE PLOT, BUT TO ACTIVELY PLACE ONE IN A PROMINENT ROLE AND THEN DEMEAN HER...

I HATE THIS SHOW. WITH A FIERY, BURNING PASSION.

Ouch, Asuka's legs are splayed in an impossible position right now. But ganbatte, Asuka, don't lose to that bastard and these bastard writers!

...

...

I hate this show.

[identity profile] cypsiman2.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I had to spend the entire morning psyching myself for this episode. I'm seriously not kidding. I really, am not exaggerating, for hyperbolic effect. This episode...this episode...your hugs are indeed welcome.

Truly Saiou is an evil and unforgivable bastard for inflicting pod-person Manjoume upon us. I mean, I know he's supposed to have Manjoume under mind-control...but COME THE FUCK ON!

Asuka and Fubuki need to flee this show, and fast!

Really, if all they're going to be is Asuka's fawning harem, at least have them be around more often! If anyone ever deserved a harm to support them through this bullshit, it's Asuka.

My friendslist has been full of nothing but good things about the Sailor Moon manga. I should really look into it.

FUBUKI! *GETS ALL THE HUGS HE WANTS!*

Seriously, after all the inane hero-worship they've given over to Judai, for Shou and Kenzan to call Fubuki's pride in his well-deserving little sister embarrassing...fuck those fucking fuckers.

Oh god, Asuka's sin is just existing in this series. Wish Franky and the rest of the Straw Hats were around to invade the NAS writing staff office and show them what they think of their bullshit.

...You're right. WHERE THE FUCK IS MISAWA! SERIOUSLY, WHERE THE FUCK IS HE! WHAT, HE GETS TO BE IN THE PREVIOUS, NIGH-ON IRRELEVANT EPISODE, BUT WHEN THE TIME COMES FOR A PLOT-RELEVANT EPISODE, TO THE EXTANT THAT THERE IS A PLOT TO BE RELEVANT TO, HE'S JUST...DOES NOT EXIST? MY HATE FOR THIS EPISODE ONLY GROWS!

GX is just plain schizophrenic. "Dark is bad, Light is good!" "No, Light is bad, Dark is good!" "No, wait, Dark is bad again, never mind!" PICK A THEME AND STICK WITH IT! FOR THAT MATTER, PICK A MOOD TOO! OTHER SHOWS CAN MANAGE SUDDEN MOOD SHIFTS, YOU CAN'T!

This show...it is an expression of every vile gender stereotype that shonen has to offer, both for men, but especially for women. Really, I could probably do a proper, academic paper on the gender politics expressed in this show...though that will have wait for Yubel, the incredible edible hermaphrodite.

Look, here's the clincher about all this; compare to when Malik used the Millennium Rod to take over Jounouchi and Anzu. Hell, go back to the early manga, when Shadi used the Millennium Key on Anzu, and note that he did this after Anzu managed to bash his enslaved professor servant, establishing her as the single greatest threat to his plan. I just...YOU CAN DO THIS PLOTLINE WITHOUT BEING DEGRADING OR DEMEANING TO THE PERSON BEING BRAINWASHED!

I now want to go onto TV Tropes and put this down as this show's Dethroning Moment of Suck. But at the same time, I've got to make sure that it doesn't just come across as me whining that the show is being mean to my favorite character. So, you know, I'm going to need to cool my head on this.

[identity profile] koi-no-soshan.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
*HUGS TIGHT*

They can hit Hell Kaiser Ryou over the head and take him with them! And Misawa, though he won't need to be subdued. Is that... *checks* Yes, those are all the characters who deserve to escape this series.

Asuka definitely deserves a harem. Or just a crowd of screaming fangirls ;P "Asuka-sama!"

I think there should be scans up on AnimeA or someplace similar still, but if you can't find any, I'd be happy to send you the files! I really wasn't able to get into the anime, but I've enjoyed reading the manga quite a bit. Plus, Takeuchi-sensei is a very good artist! You'll want to check out the scanned artbooks, too. Also, there's yuri! ;P

*hugs Fubuki again!*

And with that idiotic idol they've got, Shou and Kenzan have even LESS right to be calling Fubuki embarrassing. There was that episode where Shou was upset over Fubuki being equated to Kaiser Ryou...damn it, I hated that moment. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, TEHRE'S A REASON YOUR OLDER BROTHER IS FRIENDS WITH HIM AND COUNTS HIM AS AN EQUAL, SHOU. DID YOU EVER CONSIDER THAT? Be polite to your older brother's friends! *coughfosterfamilycough*

Really, I just... I'm still amazed that a series with a cast of such rude 'heroes' was ever made in Japan. Then again, even the Sailor Moon anime back in the 90s thought it was just fine for Mamoru and Chibiusa to be dismissive of Usagi (I'm very annoyed about that- both on principle, and because it's so different to the actually caring relationship they had in the manga. It's why I gave up on the anime version so quickly).

I think GX does have a mood: tasteless and bad. Damn it, this is defnitely one of those times when I wish that the manga had come first, and the anime had been adapted from it.

I'll look forward to it, then! That's definitely an essay I'd like to read!

Hermaphrodite...I'm going to guess that they bungle it horribly?

Yes, it indicated that they're both potentially useful and a notable threat if they remain free! This is one of those cases where it's very notable that the author has said so little about it, from what I know, at least. I can't imagine that Takahashi-sensei is happy with the GX anime. At all.

Ooh, link me if you do it? I'd suggest pointing out the whole 'only two female characters are prominent in this series' fiasco, too. When you look at it that way, it really highlights the sexism. There's just no excuse for such slanted casting. I know that one might not necessarily be using a checklist when developing the cast, but this goes far beyond that into intentionally using as few female characters as possible.

I just don't understand how people can somehow turn off their brains enough to ENJOY this.

[identity profile] cypsiman2.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed! The others can just rot on their insipid little island and play all the goddamn meaningless, emotionally empty card games that they want.

She can get together with Utena, and totally commiserate on the burden of being so popular with the ladies!

Well, I'll let you know how that goes when I get the chance, I am pretty busy as it stands. Tomorrow I'm going to be going to babysit my niece and nephew, so that's going to have me pretty busy for most of the day, won't have access to a computer and all that. And Yuri goes with EVERYTHING! :DDD

Seriously, so much is just taken for granted, or treated as given, and it's not, so Shou and Kenzan just come of as so much WORSE!

Yeah, I had heard that the anime had flanderized/exaggerated those aspects from the manga. Hmmm...

"Yubel, A Microcosm of Gender Dysfunction". How does that sound for a title?

Well, it's not so much that they bungle it...as it is that they just never fucking explain WHY! And no one ever comments on it, or notes it, or questions it...it's just this bit of gratuitous pseudo-meaningful imagery/symbolism, rather like the "Angels" in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

From what I know, Kazuki Takahashi contributed a few character designs, including oddly enough, Yubel (Hey, after Zorc's dragon crotch, that doesn't surprise me in the least), but then the anime writers do with those character designs whatever they want, without any real regard for whatever notes or anything that Takahashi-sensei may have put down. I imagine that he's only tangentially aware of what's going on in the Yugioh franchise, and so most of the more obnoxious details of it all have just plain escaped his notice. Which is just as well, I would not want to be witness to the breakdown he'd experience after really seeing what they did to his baby (Yugioh).

I will, as soon as I can be calm enough to write without undue fucking swearing. That may take a motherfucking while, as you may have noticed.

Whatever you do, do not read the youtube comments. I mean, never do so in any event, but in this, especially.

[identity profile] koi-no-soshan.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I'd pay to see that! Damn it, why couldn't Asuka be in a good series? If i had any talent with the card games, I really WOULD write an Asuka-centric fic. And if I get any AU ideas, that may still be an option.

...If I wasn't so tired tonight, I'd work more on Yuugihime. Who knows, maybe I'll get a bit of the second chapter hammered out anyway!

Sorry you'll be busy! And yes, yes it does. :D

One thing which I've noticed they flanderized a lot was Usagi's initial immaturity. In the manga she started growing up due to her experiences and the regaining of her memories from her past life quite quickly, but in the anime she just...never seemed to change much. It doesn't help that the seiyuu chosen for her has a very childish voice, and was never allowed to age it up at all. I almost want to check one of the episodes which shows her future self to see if they even aged her voice up for THAT.

It sounds great, but I thought you were going to write an essay on all of the genderfail aspects of the series? ;P But no, it is a great title!

I actually do rather hope that Takahashi-sensei isn't much involved in it or in witnessing it. It might be a vain hope, since usually mangaka keep up with what's going on in the adaptions of their series, but we can hope.

Well, I'll still look forward to it! And if you like, I'll offer my services as an editor to remove the swearwords ;)

Well, the videos I've been watching just don't HAVE any comments on them, most of the time. Fortunately, because seeing undue praise of this series would seriously anger me.

[identity profile] cypsiman2.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've talent, and I'm finishing off Chapter 19 of my third and final GX fic as we speak. That said, it is a Manjoume-centric chapter, but in this fic, he doesn't suck donkey-balls!

Wait, does that mean you have the first chapter? Does that mean I can read it? :3

I now want to do a meme, in which people name off stories, and I show how the addition of Yuri would make it better! XD

Well, Yubel presents such an interesting and unique way to explore the failtastic gender politics of GX, but I can definitely discuss Asuka and, when she shows up again, Rei. All the female minor characters, all three or four of them, will get their own section.

Yeah, there's just no real way to know, is there? But like I mentioned, Takahashi-sensei has no real control over the franchise at this time, so the considerable fail of GX and 5Ds is all on NAS.

No, I think I'll be able to write it without all the motherfucks and the shitcocks and all that. It just...won't be as colorful as my commentary usually is.

That's probably due to the fact that there's lots of videos of the same episode, so they each dilute the number of hits and comments gathered. Small blessings at this point, but we should be thankful for them nonetheless.

[identity profile] koi-no-soshan.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
True, true!

Well, it's not actually complete... ^^; I decided that until I finish up the last few missing scenes, I might as well keep going forwards as well. I'll put it up on f-lock when the first chapter is done, though!

Ooh, that sounds like fun! Yuri does certainly make everything better! (possibly why all of my original stories have at least one yuri pairing ;P)

I look forward to it!

Oh, I'd never dream of pinning the blame on anyone else. I just hope that Takahashi-sensei doesn't suffer for their fail. And damn it, the original mangaka, in cases like this especially, really SHOULD have more control.

I look forward to it too! Link me when it's done?

Ah, true. I doubt many people were watching the raw I was watching, after all ^^;

[identity profile] cypsiman2.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, that so? Well, I'm looking forward to when its ready! Ganbatte!

Unfortunately, unless you're a success on the level of J.K. Rowling, you pretty much have no control over your own story. Really sucks for the creators and artists out there.

I shall do so!

Part of me is tempted to watch a raw episode, try to figure out what the fuck is going on, and then have you tell me how much I got wrong!

[identity profile] koi-no-soshan.livejournal.com 2010-08-02 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy it!

Really, writers should all hope for a sort of middle-ground: popular enough to sell well, but not enough to have to worry about adaptions screwing up their original storylines. Though over here it's probably easier, since so few sf/fantasy movies are made in general. It's probably not a balance a mangaka can aspire to, though- if you've made it into the serial magazine, then you stand a good chance of getting an anime.

When the publishers try to edit your original book out of recognition, though, then sadly, you're probably in much hotter water.

*cries* You know, I want to professionally publish fantasy novels one day- this sort of talk is very disheartening.

Yay, I look forward to it!

^^; If you want to? Though who knows- GX is so predictable, you might not get much wrong!

I hope you don't mind if I ask for some advice? I've been wanting to read/watch some scifi, but I really have no idea where to start looking- I'd be very grateful for recommendations of novels/series with interesting characters!

Recommendations in the realm of Sci-Fi? Well, as far as books go, the works of Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Frank Herbert are all very good. Early Orson Scott Card is also good, before he got self-indulgent and started using his books for his personal political screeds. Ursula K. Leguin's Left Hand of Darkness is excellent, and is practically one-half of the inspiration for Simoun.

As for stuff to watch, there's Martian Successor Nadesico, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Macross, all fine animes, though naturally the science there is a bit...soft.

Hmm. I recently had reason to read a short story by Asimov-sensei, 'The Last Question'. It was very interesting, but at the same time...

I could be wrong, but the feeling I'm getting about hard scifi is that it tends to be focused more on the scientific issues as a whole than the character conflicts themselves? There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not really what I'm interested in reading. Of the little scifi which I've read/watched, I've found that the series I enjoyed were the ones which largely put the science in the background, so that its main importance was in how it impacted the characters.

Frank Herbert-sensei...Dune, right? And I've been meaning to look up Leguin-sensei's books...

I refuse to read Orson Scott Card on principle. I don't want to even read the works of such a vile man, let alone pay money for them.

My experience with Outlaw Star is limited to having bought the box-sets for a friend years ago and then having watched a few episodes with her. From what I do remember, though, I enjoyed it.

Have you ever watched Crest of the Stars? I found that I still have a few old discs lying around, so I've been re-watching it, and so far I'm quite enjoying it.

Yeah, Orson Scott Card is definitely a vile man, so I totally respect your decision on the matter.

Crest of the Stars...haven't watched that. I'll have to fit that in my queue somewhere down the line.

Oh, and I forgot one other series; The Big O. Basically, Batman+Ontological Mysteries+GIANT ROBOTS! Also, snarky robots.

Can you give us a clue how you feel about this episode? ;)

Yeah, I was being a bit subtle, wasn't I?

I know, I know, I shouldn't watch terrible shows like this, but it's like a train wreck, where all the actors are terrible and no one can remember their lines and the director is convinced that he's the only fucking genius in the whole industry.
