Season two of VR has finally come to an end, and like with season 1 I will share my thoughts on the season as a whole. Thesis statement, this show is still really bad and no one should watch it. I shouldn't have watched it, I make bad decisions in my life so that I may serve as a warning to everyone else.

Lots of spoilers below the cut, but then again this show is so trite that you could see just about all of them coming well in advance.

The first season of VR has come to an end, and so I've determined this would be a good time to give my thoughts on the season as a whole. I will state at the outset that I think that this is a bad series, that it suffers from numerous flaws of such severity that they render it impossible for me to enjoy the series. If reading criticism of the series would make you angry, please turn away now. If you are able to keep a level head, then go right ahead and read what I have to offer, and hopefully I will have something to offer.

Note: This review is going to be spoiler heavy and assumes that you are already familiar with the show.

The DOMA arc of Yugioh DM was a toxic cancer that is to blame for the direction of much of the franchise.

Yugioh GX was a garbage fire that was then hit with a nuclear bomb.

Yugioh 5Ds started promsingly but crashed and burned hard.

Yugioh Zexal was bad all the way through.

Yugioh Arc-V fumbled here and there but is by far the strongest and best spin-off the franchise has ever seen. It made me like Crow for pete's sake!

Yugioh VRAINS...isn't really doing it for me and if it does what I fear it is going to do, I'm likely to drop it soon.
cypsiman2: I will love them forvever. (Yugioh)
So I finally get around to picking up volume 8 of the GX Manga (Only one volume left ;_;), and there's a part where Edo Phoenix is just standing around, talking to himself about how Duel Academy was established by "The charismatic Seto Kaiba and his younger brother the Genius Mokuba Kaiba". And I'm of two minds on this; one is that this should really be the other way around, because Seto Kaiba is nowhere near as socially adjusted as Mokuba is, though I suppose things can change after ten years or so...but the other, more important thing, is the part where Mokuba is actually remembered as being more than just Seto's tagalong, only good for getting kidnapped. This is part of why I love the GX manga so, so much.

The Following memes were taken from [livejournal.com profile] sam_cc

First meme.

1. Comment to this post with the name of a character that I have written in fic. Or geeked out about. You should probably make sure it's one I've written more than once or twice.

2. I will comment telling you the following:

A. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
B. One of his/her best traits.
C. One of his/her worst traits.
D. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
E. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character (if I've written them).
F. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.

Second meme.

Choose five series (no peeking before you choose them), list them, and then answer the questions behind the cut.
1. Yugioh (Manga)
2. Avatar the Last Airbender
3. Mahou Sentai Magiranger
4. Kamen Rider Ryuki
5. Garo

Questions and answers behind the cut. Also, changing one question. )

Comment to this post asking for a list, and I will give you five things I associate with you. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your LJ (or just add a reply back at me). Other people (including me~) can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

[livejournal.com profile] sarajayechan gave me the following five items.

Kataang, Utena, Yu-Gi-Oh, Gatchaman, lol asoiaf )

On the last episode, a painfully obvious and painful plotline was established wherein Yuuma was framed for pranks he did not commit; at the time I'd stated that obviously Yuuma would be exonerated, and all those who'd so erroneously accused him would then beg his forgiveness, how could they have possibly thought such horrible things about him, truly they are not worthy of him. Then it occurred to me that there was another, equally insipid and trite possibility, that Yuuma would not get the forgiveness of his peers, but he would be magnanimous of his peers and would endure the slings and arrows of their unjust accusations, truly Yuuma is such a marvel, would that we could aspire to his heights.

Well, the fraud is exposed...and yet neither of these things happened. It was just..."Oh hey, we can prove that Yuuma did not do all those horrible things that everyone said he did." And nothing comes of it. To me, that seems an incredible display of narrative incompetence; that Shin Yoshida is unable to properly prop up his idiot hero through false accusation martyrdom...that's just special. True, I shouldn't be surprised, Shin Yoshida is after all both the man behind the DOMA arc AND the man who screwed up the Memory World arc for the anime, so gross incompetence of the highest caliber is not an unknown with this guy. And yet, I am.

Skipping over episode 4 on account of it being a big pile of anticlimactic bull even for this show...and right into this episode, which features Yuma being blamed for stuff he didn't do, setting up the scene where all the people who yelled at him and were mean to him will be forced to admit they were wrong and beg for his forgiveness, and of course Yuma will be magnanimous about it, and thus instead of spending time establishing legitimate merit and virtue for our "Hero", we'll just let him endure false accusations instead. That's...all I really feel like saying about this one, as the rest of the stupidity is of a thoroughly boring, annoying, and pedestrian variety.

Over three years. 151 chapters. 532,369 words. Approximately 140 duels. More than two dozen decks. More cards than I dare try to count. That's how much of myself I put into these fics, this Alternate Universe Rewrite of Yugioh GX as motivated by the vastly superior Yugioh GX Manga, which ended only a short while ago.

It feels good to have finally finished this monster of a project. It will be a long time before I start something like that again, and certainly not on such a huge scale.

In any event, for the sake of convenience I will now post the links to this three-part story.

Year One, The Trial of Shadows: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4703308/1/Year_One_The_Trial_of_Shadows

Year Two, The Trial of Light: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5030789/1/Year_Two_The_Trial_of_Light

Year Three, The Trial of the Heart: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5030789/1/Year_Two_The_Trial_of_Light

Also, while not necessary, I also wrote a set of Yugioh fics that inform my GX stories.

Rebirth of the Shadow Games, the Night Before: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4081305/1/Rebirth_of_the_Shadow_Games_The_Night_Before

Rebirth of the Shadow Games, Dusk Night and Dawn: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4090099/1/Rebirth_of_the_Shadow_Games_Dusk_Night_Dawn

Rebirth of the Shadow Games, After the End: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4473265/1/Rebirth_of_the_Shadow_Games_After_the_End

Finally, because I am the sort of person who doesn't know when to stop, I'm going to compile a "soundtrack" for all this. So, yeah.

Chapter 64 is the last one, and despite the fact that the ending was rushed as all hell, it still managed to be be pretty damn good, almost on par with the original manga's ending. It really makes me wish that this hadn't been rushed out like this, so that we could have seen everything that had been planned out, because this was a manga that showed every sign of having been thoroughly thought through from early on, unlike a certain OTHER spin-off on the franchise.

Oh, and the reason why the Yugioh GX manga, the best thing to happen to the franchise since the original series, was being rushed through by editorial mandate? To make room for this.
