Yugioh R, Volume 4! Is it four times the fun?
Chapter 25, Seto Kaiba is skeptical about Yakou's claim of possessing the Evil Gods on the grounds that there are only three God cards and Yuugi has all of them. Yakou explains that Pegasus created the Evil Gods to counter the Egyptian Gods if the latter went on a rampage, and that he'll use them to pass judgment on Yuugi. Kaiba says Gekko was the better duelist, and that the two of them will go to the Apex Arena to fight. Then the scene shifts back to Yuugi and his bunch, where Depre is taking his loss pretty damn hard and has to be escorted out. Yuugi declares that he can't lose until he rescues Anzu, and Richie says that Depre was the same, that for him and the other orphans taken in by Pegasus he was their Sun and they can't survive without him. Richie then goes on to say that he wants to duel Gekko to punish him for his betrayal. Gekko accepts, saying that outsiders should never have been involved, while Richie says that Pegasus is all that matters. And as the duel progresses, Gekko takes some early and nasty hits, with Richie explaining that he's been out in the world building his strength while Gekko rested on his laurels, and when Pegasus is revived he will be declared the perfect duelist.
Chapter 26, Richie brags about his Black Duel Disk, comparing it to a Black Belt in Karate. Before long Gekko is down to 700 life points while Richie still has 4000, and Gekko explains to Richie that the reason he became so strong is because he lost Pegasus, and while it was not good that they lost him they can't stay his children forever. Gekko turns the duel around by summoning Angel 07, a monster that can seal off all other monster effects, but just as he goes in for the kill, there is a flash of light, and Gekko's life points have been reduced to zero!
Chapter 27, Jounouchi and Honda beat up a bunch of suits, Jounouchi commenting on how long its been since they've had an actual proper fist fight, and then the scene shifts back to Yuugi, who looks understandably shaken up. We then get a quick replay of what happened during Gekko's final attack and the traps Richie used to defeat him. Richie then explains the difference between him and Gekko, that while Gekkou is trying to protect people he himself is trying to give Pegasus his life back the way Pegasus gave him his life back, and it was that difference in will that decided the match. Furthermore, Richie declares that since Gekkou was dueling on Yuugi's behalf, Yuugi can't advance and face Yakou, and so he leaves sealing the door behind him. We get some pretty heart-rending shots of Yuugi and a 'Big No' as he realizes he won't be able to save Anzu. Bandit Keith then ambushes Richie and challenges him to a duel, saying that Jounouchi is his and he's still not quite used to all the new rules since his revival.
Chapter 28, we're back on the roof and Wila Mette sees Kaiba and Yakou rise up for their duel. At first Yakou refuses to summon any monsters, and Kaiba combines his 'Material' monsters into a mighty chimera, the Mosaic Manticore, but Yakou activates his trap and copies it, which is just fine for Seto as he infects every monster on the field with a debilitating disease and immunizes his own monster. He attacks, leaving Yakou with two pieces of the material monster, which he sacrifices to summon Belial, who can't be attacked by low-level monsters. So Seto sacrifices two pieces of his monsters to summon out, of course, Blue Eyes White Dragon. Inheriting the vaccine of the sacrificed monsters, Blue Eyes attacks. Kaiba finishes the chapter by declaring that Yakou isn't worthy of possessing the God cards and to get off his property.
Chapter 29, we get a flashback of Gekko and Yakou dueling, with Gekko winning and providing suggestions for the sorts of cards Yakou could use to make his combo work better. Yakou then questions his twin brother, wanting to know how they could be so similar yet Gekko is the one regarded as being 'Perfect'. Pegasus refers to Yakou as a diamond in the rough, and we hear people referring to Yakou as a bad copy of Gekkou. A bright flash brings us back to the present, and Yakou feels the presence of the Evil Gods in his deck. Seto uses a combo to bring out his other two Blue Eyes White Dragons, and while his virus trap keeps the new ones from attacking, its not looking good for Yakou. Kaiba draws fusion and decides to bring out the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, but this triggers Yakou's trap, allowing him to use Kaiba's Blue Eyes White Dragons as the sacrifices for The Wicked Avatar! And all the while, Yakou's eyes are going real crazy.
Chapter 30, The Wicked Avatar copies the form of Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, plus one attack point, which as Yakou points out is still the decisive difference. Yakou then thanks about how he's lived as Gekko's copy, and now with the God of Copies under his control he will be connected to his lord Pegasus once more. Kaiba tries to defense himself, but then Yakou summons The Wicked Dreadroot and uses both Evil Gods to destroy him.
Chapter 31, Mokuba, Jounouchi, and Honda reach the Duel Ring Server, and through the cameras they get to see Kaiba being attacked directly by The Wicked Avatar. Seto Kaiba has a vision of a shadowy Blue Eyes White Dragon roaring at him like something out of a Shadow Game, and he freaks. Yakou then commands his guinea pig to summon the final Evil God, and we cut to Richie being destroyed by Bandit Keith's 'The Wicked Eraser'. The 'Rebirth of Avatar' project roars into action, and Anzu's soul calls out to Yuugi, begging for his help. Things get pretty tense as it seems as though all will be lost in Yakou's victory, but everyone pulls together and refuses to give up!
Chapter 32, Yuugi runs into another Card Professor, and Atem god-stomps his ass with Osiris. Yakou attempts to summon Pegasus back to life, but something goes wrong with The Wicked Avatar. It turns out that Mokuba was able to shut off the Duel Ring Server in time, thanks to Yuugi's super quick duel, using that to create an opportunity to program in a 'stop' order. As Yakou witnesses Pegasus disappearing before him, he screams and we cut to Jounouchi and Honda, who reunite with Yuugi. Jounouchi attacks Gekko before finding out about the whole 'evil twin' thing, and Bandit Keith, sick of being ignored, challenges Jounouchi as the man he hates most in all the world.
So, what do I think of all this? To be honest, its very exciting stuff! The action has reached the climax with the attempted revival of Pegasus, and soon we shall be reaching the resolution and the denouement. The scene where all seems lost is especially heart-wrenching, as Yuugi's emotions flow off the page very easily. The dueling action is pretty dang good too, working on both metaphorical levels and on gameplay levels.
Yes, Yugioh R has definitely shaped up to be a fine entry in the Yugioh manga. The anime spin-offs, meanwhile, are but the fevered imaginings of the internet and do not actually exist.
