cypsiman2: I still believe in my dreams (No Development)

So now it's daytime, and Judai's playing some sort of video game version of Duel Monsters, and he just can't get Fusion into his hand. Oh, he's playing against Shou, and...Shou wins? What is this even about? I mean...what? Yeah, apparently this was the Promotion Exam simulation that Judai just lost, and then Judai asks if Hayato will be okay if they don't wake him up, and Shou says he was up until daybreak to get his deck ready...and the only Shou would know this is if he'd stayed up that late too, which he obviously didn't. Careless, thoughtless writers are careless and thoughtless. Judai says that Hayato will have an extra hard time since he's repeating the year and all, Shou tells him to pipe down, Hayato will hear him, Judai apologizes, that will be his token human moment for the episode, and of course Hayato heard the whole thing, because he's not really asleep, he's thinking about how this year is his last chance. What a shocker.

TITLE SCREEN! HAYATO VS. CHRONOS! AYERS ROCK SUNRISE hey, did you ever wonder what would happen if an imperial storm trooper took a shot at a red shirt?

So apparently Duel Academia has an Art Class. Who knew? Shou paints Magician's Valkyria, Judai says that his cards need to be strong and cool (fuck him), and his painting is a hideous abomination before the art world. Shou does not know what to say, and Judai asks Hayato what he painted; it is a beautiful landscape, well above and beyond the third grade doodles that Judai and Shou put together. Of course, we need an unfunny gag involving Judai being a moron, so he thinks that Hayato's painted a pickling stone, and Shou has to explain to him that it's the Ayers Rock in Australia. Hayato attempts to correct Judai's ignorance by explaining that the Ayers Rock is called the center of the world, and is sacred ground for the aborigines. Seriously, Hayato's painting is damn good, and everyone praises it, as well they should. Hayato says it is a special place to him as well, and then Chronos calls out on the PA system, saying that Hayato is to come to the Principal's office. Judai and Shou wonder what that's about, and now we're in the Principal's office, presumably to find out.

Samejima gives Hayato a card, and it was apparently the card he designed for a contest sponsored by Industrial Illusions, and the card is of course of the Ayers Rock. Also, show, could you have mentioned this contest that Hayato applied at some point earlier on in the series? No? You needed that time to shill Judai? Okay...and then Pegasus calls in at just the right moment. Hey, Pegasus is alive...because the GX anime takes place in the same continuity as DOMA, and we do not discuss DOMA around these parts, so lets never mention it again. And you can really tell that Pegasus's voice actor is totally phoning all his lines in, he doesn't give a shit and neither should you. Anyway, long story short, Pegasus wants to hire Hayato to be a professional card designer for Industrial Illusions, all Hayato will need is Duel Academia's recommendation, and he'll be good to go. And thus ends Pegasus's cameo. Wow, that was certainly worth it.

So yeah, Samejima has no problem giving Hayato his recommendation, Hayato is thankful, and Chronos says to hold on. He points out that Hayato's repeating a grade, so how can he give his recommendation to such a dropout boy? Samejima concedes that Chronos has a point, and Chronos says that he could be convinced to approve Hayato, if Hayato can beat him in tomorrow's practical exam. However, if Hayato loses he'll be expelled at once, and Samejima blithely says Hayato should just try his best. Yeah, that's REAL encouraging, Principal Samejima. Say, have you answered to anyone for the fact that you knew what was really going on the whole time during the Seven Stars arc, but refused to say anything about it? No? Well that figures.

So Hayato leaves the office, and Judai and Shou are right outside...even though they should still be in class. But hey, they've never suffered any consequences for skipping class before, why should that change now? Judai and Shou are oblivious to Hayato's mood, having seemingly and inexplicably failed to have heard Chronos's ultimatum. That's the only explanation I've got for this bullshit. But Judai and Shou offer to do whatever they can to help, so I hate them a micron less. But only a micron less.

So now it's nighttime, and Judai gets up because the plot says he does. Hayato is outside, looking over the water, and Judai asks what he's doing, that he should get back to sleep. Hayato is all 'I'll never be able to beat Professor Chronos", Judai's all 'you never know until you try', and Hayato knew it was pointless, tomorrow he'll be heading back home to his father. Judai asks if he's okay with that, doesn't he like dueling, Hayato says he does, Judai says it doesn't matter if he wins or loses, which is pretty fucking hollow coming from Judai. Judai tells Hayato to use the card he made to do a duel that only he can duel, say that three times fast, and to enjoy dueling with all his heart. Oh look, Hayato says he almost forgot something important, isn't that just precious? No, no it is not, it is bullshit that this is being presented as not only a significant truth, but even as something that would be the least bit fucking relevant to Hayato's situation. Judai, the outcome of this duel? It actually matters! Hayato's not dueling for shits and giggles, he's doing it for the opportunity to pursue his ideal career, so take your casual, blase optimism and shove it up your ass, right alongside your head.

So now it's daytime, and the duel will begin very shortly. Judai cheers Hayato on, telling him to captivate them...and then Shou asks Judai if he isn't worried. And of course he isn't, Hayato's going to show them an interesting duel; the fact that Hayato isn't performing for them but is actively fighting for his dreams in life, has gone right over Judai's tiny little head. Goddammit, I fucking hate Judai, I want to punch him in his snot-nosed little face. And of course it is up to Manjoume to say that the important thing in the promotion exam duel is to win, so we know that that's wrong. Because Manjoume said it. Even though he is in fact right. Because the writers are morons. Chronos declares that he'll let Hayato have the first move, and the duel begins.

Hayato sets a monster and ends his turn, and it's kind of bizarre how there's no background music at all for this. Ah, there we go! Chronos plays Magnet Circle LV2, which will let him special summon a level two or lower machine monster from his hand, and the monster he special summons is Antique Gear. Furthermore, since he has one Antique Gear on the field, he can now special summon another one from his hand. Wow, two monsters special summoned to the field, I wonder what Chronos is going to do next. Ah, he sacrifices them to summon Antique Gear Golem. I was expecting him to summon...I don't know, something other than the same monster he's used in his previous duels. I don't know why, these writers love repetition. Chronos attacks Hayato's face down monster, and what do you know, it's Death Koala, and since this time Hayato remembered to set it first, now it can activate its effect, dealing 400 points of damage for every card in Chronos's hand. Of course, Antique Gear Golem's effect means it does 1200 damage to Hayato when it destroys Death Koala, so Chronos is safely ahead.

Pointless banter from the Peanut Gallery, flashback to episode 9, I want to punch Judai in the mouth, nothing new there, and Hayato takes his turn, summoning Eucalyptus Mole in defense position, and then setting a card to end his turn. Chronos takes his turn, we get to see that his hand now has a second Antique Gear Golem in it, and so he declares his attack with the Antique Gear Golem he has on the field. Eucalyptus Mole is destroyed for 1700 points of damage, and Hayato declares that when Eucalyptus Mole is destroyed in battle, he can special summon a monster from his deck that has "Koala" in its name, so he special summons Big Koala with 2700 attack points. Chronos then summons Antique Gear Soldier in defense position, and it sure is a good thing Chronos knew that Eucalyptus Mole was going to special summon another monster, otherwise Chronos would have summoned Antique Gear Soldier in attack position with the intent to finish the duel that turn.

Hayato takes his turn and plays the spell card Wild Nature's Release, increasing Big Koala's attack power by its defense power, which is 2000. So now that Big Koala has an attack power of 4700, it is able to destroy Antique Gear Golem for 1700 points of damage. Chronos mentally congratulates Hayato, Hayato activates his trap card Cattle Mutilation; he returns a Beast-type monster on his field to his hand, and then he can special summon a Beast-monster of the same level from his hand. So he puts Big Koala into his hand, and then brings it right back out. Now it can attack again, and it won't be destroyed by Wild Nature's Release, and I smack Shou around for having to have all this explained to him, even though he was there during the fucking Dueling Monkey episode. I'm not forgetting that episode, I don't see why the fuck Shou should get to. So Hayato attacks and destroys Antique Gear Soldier, AND FUCK THAT MUSIC CUE, WHY GOD WHY, TEAR MY EARS OFF AND END MY PAIN...NO WAIT, TEAR OFF THE COMPOSER'S EARS INSTEAD! Chronos thinks once more that that was a good play, Hayato sets a card to end his turn, and Chronos comes to think that Hayato hasn't just been sitting around and doing nothing, which would have been nice if we'd been allowed to see any of that, but hey, Judai was busy dueling a crazy sailor man, that's clearly the higher priority.

So Chronos takes his turn, plays Pot of Greed, and then plays Antique Gear Factory, and the factory looks just plain silly.

EYECATCH!

Anyway, with Antique Gear Factory, Chronos can summon an Antique Gear monster from his hand without sacrificing monsters on the field, and he chooses Antique Gear Golem; all he needs to do is to remove Antique Gear monsters in his grave from play such that their combined levels is twice that of the Antique Gear monster he wants to summon. Oh, and now the Principal is there. Why the fuck didn't they just acknowledge him being there from the beginning, I've no idea. Anyway, removing both Antique Gears (each level 2), one Antique Gear Soldier (Level 4), and the first Antique Gear Golem (Level 8), Chronos meets the sixteen levels he needs for Antique Gear Factory to summon the second Antique Gear Golem. Judai thinks this is awesome, utterly oblivious to how Hayato might interpret this, and Chronos says that while Hayato has indeed grown, he still needs to win the duel. So Chronos attacks, Big Koala is destroyed for 300 points of damage, and Hayato activates his trap card Beast Trail; with it he adds a beast monster, Death Kangaroo, to his hand. Then Chronos discards a card to activate Antique Gear Drill, which will let him set a spell card of his choice from his deck, ending his turn.

Everyone's all 'Hayato is screwed', except for Judai, because he says Hayato hasn't given up yet! ...Breathe in, breathe out...and now he's got everyone cheering. Charming. One uncoordinated flashback montage of duels later, Hayato realizes what everyone's taught him, to always have fun no matter what, and Hayato exclaims that he's he didn't give up like last year. Blah blah blah, Hayato draws the card he designed, Hayato thinks about how his dad let him go to Australia on the condition that he give up on being a duelist, and just as he was about to throw away his deck from on top of the Ayers Rock, the sunrise inspired him to remember that he loved dueling.

...Wait, if is his dad let him go there on the condition that he'd give up dueling, and he went there, then how the fuck was he able to go back to Duel Academia? We've seen Hayato's dad, there was no way in hell Hayato would have been able to change his mind at all. Jesus Duck-Fucking Christ, the plot-holes, they are so fucking huge, you could drop the Ayers Rock into them!

So yeah, Hayato plays his card, Ayers Rock Sunrise; he goes on about how he won't give up on his dreams, and then he announces that with his card he'll special summon a Beast Monster in his grave, Big Koala. But that's not all! Now, for every Beast, Winged-Beast, and Plant type monster in his grave, his opponent's monsters lose 200 attack points, so that means Antique Gear Golem loses 400 attack points. Then Hayato plays Fusion, using Death Kangaroo and Big Koala to fusion summon Master of Oz. Now we get the culmination of what Hayato's year at Duel Academia has led up to, Chronos thinks that Hayato is splendid, and while he'd like to be able to take Hayato's attack and let him win...

Yeah, Hayato attacks with Master of Oz, Chronos acts professional for once and activates his quick-spell card, Limiter Removal, which doubles the attack power of all machine monsters he controls, which means Antique Gear Golem now has an attack power of 5200, which means that Hayato loses. Everyone applauds Hayato for a job well done, I guess, and even though Hayato lost, Chronos gives him his recommendation anyway, even though he said that Hayato would have to win for that to happen. Bullshit moral victory is bullshit. Also, this means Hayato will be leaving the show, but does anyone give a fuck about that? I don't. So everyone goes out to watch Hayato's plane fly off, and the spirit of Death Koala is in the seat right behind Hayato. Okay...end episode.

NEXT TIME! Kaiser Ryou is number one on the exam, and now he wants to duel Judai for his Graduation Exhibition Duel. Because Judai just hasn't gotten enough duels as it is, amirite? EPISODE TITLE, VS. THE KAISER (PART 1) POWER BOND AND CYBER END.

Well, Hayato started off as a waste of space, and he ended as a waste of space. And quite frankly, the whole 'moral victory' thing they had going on with him was really fucking annoying. Why the fuck can't Judai get a few 'moral victories', if all he cares about is having fun and not about winning or losing? Oh, right, because then he wouldn't be the precious author's pet, that's why.
