I'm still putting the idea of a full-out AU on the backburner. I like magic systems, forcing it back to canon's one might be fun.
Oh, that's such an aggravating attitude... And really, most manga is so heavily stylized that there just isn't much way to get across race besides skin tone, unless you want it to look stereotyped/caricatured. But sometimes manga is rather failtastic about it, too. I remember Ouke no Monshou and its white Egyptians...that wasn't 'stateless', that was just history fail.
