Personally, I never got what the big deal was about a movie. A novel or comic adaption could have done things from a new angle, but a movie is just a shorter show. Plus, I always felt many of the show's visuals would be hard to translate into live action.
On the note of public opinion, I have been reading reviews (first off, I was expecting bad, but not that bad...), while Ebert's and reviews from geeky corners of the internet have blasted the movie for its stupid changes, a lot of the mainstream reviews take potshots at the show (or at least what they think the show is like based off the movie and assumptions about kid's shows), and seem willing to blame many of the movie's failings off the fact it was based off a kid's show.
Korra should be too far along in production to be affected, but anything after that...
