Mainly? Higher stakes and an opponent with better presence. I don't care too much about animation unless it's genuinely awful- remember, I'm still used to the animation of the early 90s, my standards are different (honestly, I think it's silly to complain about animation quality in a long-running series; they don't have the time or budget for Ghibli-quality animation and never will, let it go). Better composition of the duel, too. Back in Battle City, the strategies were interesting and clearly presented enough that they could be impressive even to those not very interested in dueling, and it's something which GX really lacks.
