Really, I find that the best stories that feature 'crack', are the stories that have the energy of a loony tunes cartoon. I mean, going to the episode of Utena where Nanami had to go India to get the super-rare curry, those scenes were done with an incredibly frantic energy, which keeps you from rejecting the sheer absurdity of it all. GX, by contrast, is too tepid and slow and timid with its crack, so I can't properly suspend my disbelief. I mean, remember the bit with the sign collapsing from Judai's sheer stupidity? In a show like One Piece, that would have been fucking hilarious!
There's not even really a plot. There's just a sequence of events, and while that can work for a Slice of Life sort of narrative, GX isn't a Slice of Life story, so that doesn't work either.
Yeah, Season 1 and 2; too random-ass and goofy. Season 3 and 4; too grim-dark and man-pain. And it's not that you can't perform sudden tone shifts, stories like the Full Metal Alchemist manga show that you can, it just takes more skill than these writers could muster on their best day.
Oh god, that bullshit about GX "Deconstructing what it would REALLY be like to play a card game for the fate of the world"...anyone who paid even the slightest attention to the original story, whether the 4Kids dub, the NAS anime, or the original manga, would know that the incredible stresses and pressures that the characters were put under were taken very seriously. The difference, is that in the original series Yuugi and Atem had an effective support network that was able to help them to bear the load, while in GX Judai has to do pretty much fucking everything all on his own. I wouldn't mind so much if people were to claim that GX was deconstructing the 'Chosen One' and the 'We Are Team Cannon Fodder' tropes, but no, they are idiots and say that it's 'The Power of Friendship' that's being deconstructed. Fuck GX and its fandom, so hard.
Yeah, there's too much history of Shou being a whiny little shit for this to turn it all around on its own. And yeah, this show would never survive under Asuka, Manjoume, and Misawa's scrutiny.
And if Fubuki were to actually be around like he should be, then no one would pay attention to Judai! And we can't have that, now can we?
It is the way of GX, to try to break what it can't have like a whiny toddler.
There's a reason why I made Saiou the new Osiris Red professor in my fic. Heck, in a way I killed two birds with one stone! And I would think the teachers would get distracted too! Hee.
