cypsiman2: I still believe in my dreams (No Development)

So we open with an Obelisk Blue student getting defeated by a walking punchline; again, I thought that Manjoume had brainwashed every member of Obelisk Blue back in episode 70? Where are these occasional no-name Obelisk Blue students coming from? Anyway, the living joke is named Mathmattica, a tenth ranked pro duelist, and he wants to know who'll duel him next. And so all the students, Red Yellow and Blue, are forced to flee, because if you do not have a name, than you can't win, even against the most pathetic and inept of opponents. Now we've got Samejima going over the records of how everyone's doing in the Genex Tournament; according to the numbers, Judai's won 20 duels and earned 60 medals, Shou's won 9 and earned 9 medals, Kenzan's won 14 and earned 23, Manjoume's won 44 and earned 123, Asuka's won 31 and earned 100, Misawa's won 35 and earned 50, and Saiou's only been in one duel, which really shouldn't be possible since the rules state that you have to be in at least one duel every day. But hey, why would we waste our time with that. Now, rather then spend time on Chronos and Napoleon about how the students are losing to the pros and that this will be bad for Duel Academia's reputation, like Duel Academia even has one at this point, let us instead crunch some numbers; remember, according to the rules, everyone enters the tournament with one GX Medal, and when you beat someone you take all of their medals and they can no longer participate. Therefore, this means that there were at least 366 duelists eliminated over the course of the tournament. This isn't important in the least, its just a way for me to amuse myself. Also, Chronos mentions something about Ultimate Weapons. Gee, I can't wait to find out.

TITLE SCREEN! PRIDE OF THE ACADEMIA well that definitely precludes judai...

So yeah, Samejima is all 'just like I thought' about Saiou not dueling anyone after defeating Prince Prince, utterly unconcerned with the fact that this is expressly against the rules. Then the Prince's secretary shows up, her name is Lynd, and good good, how high would those heels have to be to force such an unnatural and uncomfortable posture and gait? Seriously, I am in way too much sympathetic pain to even begin to be able to be aroused by this. Anyway, she's just here to drop an FYI regarding the fact that Saiou now has control of a Laser Satellite that can destroy the entire planet. It's been six episodes since that happened, and only now does Samejima find out that he's unwittingly facilitated the probable destruction of the entire planet. Way to keep on the ball Samejima! Now over to Saiou, who's all bragging about how now he can end the age of darkness and fill the world with light, due in no small part to the fact that he is surrounded by idiots. Suddenly, his head starts hurting; possibly he's subconciously wondering why he diked around for the past six episodes, instead of activating the satellite at the first opportunity like he should have. He attempts to insert the two keys that will end the world, but it would seem that there is still a part of Saiou that does not want sub-par Bond Villain rip-off, and so he does not. I know that they've been playing off of Saiou's double-sided nature for a while now, but unlike with say, Malik, I'm just left confused as to what Saiou even thinks he's doing half the time.

Anyway, out in the woods we have a bunch of Ra Yellows whose character designs are mostly transparent rip-offs of existing characters, and the talking equation for laughter shows up. Seriously, are we going to get any characterization for this guy, or are we just going to have to settle for his stupid theme suit? Yeah, that's what I thought. The Ra Yellows are unreasonably frightened since, you know, the only bad thing about losing is that you don't win the big prize, and suddenly...well, I suppose that to defeat a one-note joke, you need a one-note joke. Yes, it is Taizan, and he's got his long hair and no shirt or shoes, which doesn't even begin to make sense, since at the end of his episode he came back to Duel Academia and wore a shirt that kept everyone around from looking flabby and out of shape by comparison. Hee, abridged series reference, hee. Judai, Shou, and Manjoume overhear this, not that it matters. So yeah, the pathetic punchlines are going to duel one another. Show, can we please get to the part where Asuka duels, and skip the idiocy for a change? No? Well, I thought I'd ask. Oh, now Chronos and Napoleon are there too. I wonder if they'll be superfluous and irrelevant as always. Anyway, we're already partway into the duel, and Taizan has 2500 life points, Big Shield Gardna, and a face-down card. Apparently its the Function Line for Hilarity's turn as he plays Illegal Summon; he gets to pick a level four or lower monster from his deck, and special summon it to his opponents side of the field. Then the opponent picks a card from their deck, and special summons it to your side of the field. So The Differential Equation for Snickering summons Mid Shield Gardna onto Taizan's side of the field, while Taizan summons Drone onto The Integration for Giggle's side of the field. Oh, and by the way, the Sum of Comedy has Gravity Bind on the field, so no attacking for level four or higher monsters.

Now The Minus of Depression activates his trap card, Fatal Abacus; from now on, whenever a monster is sent from the field to the grave, that monster's owner takes 500 damage. Now The Factor of Fun activates the effect of his Transector of Servey Warrior; by sacrificing a monster he controls, he can attack directly. So he sacrifices Drone, and since that was originally Taizan's monster he takes 500 damage from Fatal Abacus, and then he attacks directly for another 1000, leaving Taizan with just 1000 life points. Oh, FYI, Illegal Summon is a permanent spell card, so the Natural Log of Degeneres can absolutely do this again on his next turn. Chronos and Napoleon shill that this is such an impressive calculation style duel or some such nonsense, and now Judai's on the scene, wondering whether Taizan went back into the mountains for his "Wild Draw" training, which would horribly contradict his episode, but hey, the writers can't be arsed to keep track of the characterization of their main characters, or some cases their existence, so what chance do the bit characters have? Anyhow, Taizan takes his turn and activates his trap card Miraculous Draw; you know, the one where you have to guess which card you're about to draw, or else you take 1000 damage instead of your opponent? The kind of card that no sane or credible duelist would ever use? Yeah, that card. Anyway, The Variable of Every Variety Show thinks that Taizan's strategy sucks, that math is the way to go. Blah blah blah, this is stupid, inane, and pointless besides, and of course Taizan correctly guesses that he's going to draw Drawler. The Trigonometric Definition of Designated Villainy takes 1000 damage, Taizan summons it, returns six cards from his hand to his deck to increase its attack power to 3000, and since Drawler is level 3, he gets to attack despite the effect of Gravity Bind and win.

The characters try to convince us that this was such a great play, and fail miserably. Also, according to Chronos, Ultimate Weapon 2 is defeating Pros elsewhere. Which would make Taizan Ultimate Weapon 1. Which really makes me question why Chronos and Napoleon haven't been fired yet, seeing as they're both mentally incompetent to do anything. And now clumsy transition as Judai, Shou, and Manjoume go looking for Ultimate Weapon 2, and find a bunch of passed out Osiris Red losers. Yes, that's right, Ultimate Weapon 2 is Motegi, that freak from episode 23, the one who inexplicably causes people to pass out whenever he duels. So, if I've got this right, when Chronos says "Ultimate Weapon", what he means is "One-shot freak that Judai defeated no sweat". Good to know! Anyway, Motegi is dueling an Elvis rip-off named Sombre Gurrerro, and allegedly he's a 9th-ranked duelist. He is of course getting drowsy, as is everyone but Judai, because Judai is sparkly. The offensive Spanish Sterotype takes issue with Motegi's relaxed approach, and so he attacks with bad salsa music, destroying both Moke-Mokes on the field, and attacking directly for 2000 points of damage. Oh hey, Chronos and Napoleon are putting on those stupid suits that let you be around without being affected by Motegi's power...somehow. I don't care. Motegi activates Dark Factory of Mass Production to get back his Moke-Mokes, and now he plays Fusion to bring out Moke Moke King, and now the duels pretty much over, as Sombre is too tired to duel and surrenders.

Wow, that was so amazing, I can't believe that Motegi isn't a main character.

Suddenly, girls scream! Yep, Judai and company are just being led around by the nose in this episode, apparently lacking in any sort of motivation or ambition that they could be pursuing instead. Ambitions, like rescuing Asuka and Misawa from the Association of Light and stopping Saiou before he gets over his cold feet and blows up the whole world. You know, stuff like that. Junko and Momoe are clinging to one another in fear as they are confronted by a snooty waiter...I'm sorry, he is in fact Sommelier Parker, 8th-Ranked pro duelist. And he wants the school age girls to taste his duel, as he suggestively shakes a glass of wine. Also, again, why are the students acting so scared? The worst that can happen is that they lose and are out of the tournament. I don't know, maybe Samejima said that all the losers would be expelled and their parents would lose their jobs and they'd have to live out on the street, all conveniently off screen. Because that's the only way I can make sense of this episode, not that it's working or anything like that.

EYECATCH!

Running! They find Junko and Momoe dueling Parker, and even though they're dueling together as a team, they're down to 1600 life points while Parker has a full 4000. Oh goody, I was hoping that the first episode in forever in which Asuka actually gets to duel would be counterbalanced by excruciatingly gross and vile sexism directed at the only two other girls who get to stick around for more than one episode. Anyway, it's Parker's turn, and his mosnter, Bacchus, gains 300 attack points during his standby phase, increasing from 1600 to 1900. Junko and Momoe, meanwhile, have Mermaid Knight in attack position, and Rescue Cat in defense.

Hilarious tangent time! While at the time of this episode Rescue Cat was indeed a weak and pathetic monster, in the current meta-game it is a grossly overpowered gamebreaker that's been outright banned from any official tournament. Which means that whichever girl it was that summoned the kitty cat wasn't being a sucky duelist, she was just ahead of her time and didn't realize it.

Anyway, Bacchus destroys Mermaid Knight for 400 damage, one of the girls screams in a really stereotypical fashion, and now Parker plays Chalice of the Gods, a Quick Spell that lets him special summon a wine token, which has 1000 attack points. It attacks and destroys Rescue Cat, and then Asuka shows up! It doesn't matter that there's no particular reason for her to be here, what matters is that she's going to kick ass and take names! Parker makes a stupid wine metaphor, and Junko and Momoe fall to their knees, unable to handle the meager opposition before them. Honestly, the writers have always had this terrible problem where they tell and don't show, and it is fully on display for this episode; none of the Pro Duelists we've seen thus far were at all impressive, and yet we're supposed to act like they are. Oh, and now Parker tries to be as sexist as the writers, and falls short of the mark. So Asuka, having had enough of this bull and unable to strike against the real badguys, the writers, settles for going after Parker. She says she'll take over for Junko and Momoe, and she'll even keep their current life point total! Heh, it sure is telling that the writers need to impose a handicap onto Asuka so that her opponent can even stand a chance against her, isn't it? Parker is okay with this, oblivious to his true role in this wretched narrative.

Blah blah blah, Parker sets a monster in face-down defense and ends his turn. Manjoume wonders if Asuka's going to abandon the white for the pride of the Blue, Shou wonders if Asuka's going to scout for recruits for the Association of Light, and Judai tells them all to be quiet, he wants to watch the duel. Asuka takes her turn, and activates Machine Angel Ritual, sacrificing Idaten from her hand to summon Benten. More stupid wine references, and Manjoume needs to spell it out for Judai and Shou. Nope, not funny. Not offensive, just not funny. And now Asuka equips Benten with Ritual Weapon, raising her attack power to 3300. She attacks Bacchus, and between battle and effect damage, Asuka just did 3000 points of damage. Parker continues to say stupid things, and takes his turn. He flip summons Champagne the Foaming Beauty, activating her effect to reduce Benten's attack power by 1000. And now Parker sacrifices both of his monsters to summon out the Level 7 Big Vintage Magnum-Mouton, with 2500 attack points. He attacks and destroys Benten for 200 damage, leaving both duelists with 1000 life points. And now he activates Bacchus Compotation; so long as he controls Big Vintage, if Asuka attacks with a level 7 or lower monster, she'll be the one to take the battle damage.

Asuka's turn, she draws White Veil. So she summons Cyber Tutu, explains her monster effect and how it will let her win while being very hot as she does so, and then Parker explains the effect of his card, see above. Asuka knows that if she uses White Veil, she'll be able to overcome Bacchus Compotation, but if she does that, she won't be able to remind Junko and Momoe of the pride of Obelisk Blue. Also, somehow Manjoume just knows that Asuka has White Veil and isn't playing it. Don't ask me how he knows, he just does. I mean, okay, he can know that its in her deck, that's no problem, but how would he know that she just drew it? Oh, and going on a tangent for a moment, why doesn't Saiou express any concern over the fact that Judai took one of his pawns away from him? I mean, back in episode 71, when Judai defeated one of his pawns, he directly intervened and made sure that he would remain his slave.

But, back to Asuka's duel! She sets a card to end her turn, and Parker activates the effect of Big Vintage, increasing its attack points by 1000 during his standby phase, and attacks. Asuka activates Holy Life Barrier, discarding White Veil to reduce all battle damage to her and her monsters to zero and swearing that she'll win not with the power of the Association of Light, but with the pride of the blue. Umm, not for nothing, but shouldn't Asuka still be brainwashed? Because honestly, she's not acting the part. Anyway, Parker ends his turn. Asuka proclaims that she'll show him the power of the ladies of Obelisk Blue, and takes her turn. First up, Pot of Greed. Next, Cyber Petit Angel, whose effect lets her add another Machine Angel Ritual from her deck to her hand. Next, Fulfillment of Contract, paying 800 life points to bring back a Ritual Monster from her grave to the field. So she takes Idaten, using her effect to take back a spell card from her grave. She of course chooses Pot of Greed, and plays it again. And for once, when the characters are cheering and going on about how great the play is, it actually is a good play! Now Asuka plays Machine Angel Ritual, sacrificing Cyber Petit and Idaten to Ritual Summon Cyber Angel Dakini. Dakini's effect activates, destroying Big Vintage, which also destroys Parker's Spell Card. Thus, Cyber Angel Dakini attacks directly for a devastating final blow, and Parker gets off one last stupid wine line before passing out.

Asuka begins to walk away, Junko and Momoe praise Asuka and ask her to come back to them, but no dice; she's in with the Association of Light for keeps, and if they don't protect the pride of the Obelisk Blue ladies on their own next time, tough luck. Tough love, but I can't blame Asuka too much, I guess that brainwashing is still kicking in after all. Blah blah blah, Manjoume and Judai realizes that Asuka's not completely brainwashed, but of course does not capitalize on this, since that would be a good idea. Oh, and long story short, Motegi and Taizan return to the plot-holes from whence they came, thus rendering Chronos and Napoleon's pathetic and nonsensical plan ruined. End episode.

NEXT TIME! Something about a duelist possessed by a shinigami, I'm sure that this will just make the GX setting even more incoherent and nonsensical than it already was. EPISODE TITLE, THE REAPER OF ONE TURN KILL card of the week is Dakini, which again, never released.

It really is striking how blind the GX writers are to their own sexism. And once this episode was done, they probably patted themselves on the back on a job well done in getting those humorless feminists to pipe down. And now I've made myself retch. Goody.
