cypsiman2: I still believe in my dreams (No Development)

So it is nighttime, and Saiou is staring into a computer monitor that is showing nothing but static. You know, it's been a very long time since I've ever gotten actual static on a television. No wait, he has his eyes closed, never mind. And now opens his eyes, and starts yelling on and on about how there must be more light, the whole world must be flooded with light. Hey, Saiou, here's a start; flip the light switch, you numbskull. Wait, now he's all 'but if I do that', and now we have that most trite of dramatic devices, the character using a mirror to argue with their split personality. The evil Saiou, if that's what it is, tells the wussy Saiou to stop his whining. And now Mizuchi randomly appears on Takuma's computer, because why not? And apparently Saiou can teleport, but only very short distances. Mizuchi just stares at her brother as he rants madly about the light, hoping he'll realize how stupid he's making himself look. But he just turns off the computer. Wow, that was worth bothering with. He starts glowing, and then a beam of light shoots up into the night sky. There is an incredibly slim possibility that this could be followed up on, but I wouldn't hold my breath over it, and neither should you.

TITLE SCREEN! THE WHITE NIGHT DUEL! JUDAI VS. ASUKA (PART 1) it figures that asuka gets stuck jobbing to judai yet again.

So light is flooding into Judai's room, but rather then destroying him, it just wakes him up. Lots more light, and then Saiou appears before Judai; he says that this is the Light of Misfortune that must not shine, and then gives Judai one of the control keys for the laser satellite that can destroy the world, telling him that he must not give it to anyone. Of course, he could ask Judai to go ahead and destroy the key so that it can't be used by anyone ever, but hey, why should the characters buck the trend and behave intelligently now? Also, he pretty much brainwashes Judai into accepting. You know, I assumed that was supposed to be the 'Good' Saiou, but now I'm not sure. Okay, I'll give the show this, the Light filled night sky does manage to come off as creepy and unnatural, which is what they were going for. Unfortunately, that doesn't even come close to compensating for the rest of the fail in this episode, let alone the rest of the series. In any event, Saiou appears before Edo, and does the same thing he did with Judai. I'll note that Saiou did not need to brainwash Edo to accept this task, and leave it at that.

Evil Saiou is now pissed at Good Saiou, who's all "ha ha, I gave the keys to the guys who can overturn fate. Sucks to be you!" More yelling, more smugness, and Evil Saiou smashes the mirror. Ah, nice touch, the writers remember that broken glass tends to cause bleeding, and on this note Evil Saiou laughs evilly. Now we shift to Saiou playing with his Tarot cards, drawing The Sun. Unsurprisingly, the Sun is a positive card, signifying optimism and vitality, power and enthusiasm. And now Asuka's there, as apparently Saiou called for her. He says that it is time for her to wake up, and show her true self, and so he doubles down on the brainwashing that Manjoume had inflicted on her in episode 70. I'm not sure why he didn't just ask her to do something for her, but hey, I'm not the guy who's suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, what do I know? Saiou gives Asuka a new deck, proclaiming her to be the one he's chosen to crush Judai and retake the key from him.

Transition! Now at the Osiris Red dorm, Shou is shocked that Saiou appeared in Judai's room, and Judai has no clue what the key was given is for. Because he is a moron, and so is Samejima for not filling in Judai on how Saiou could have blown up the world at any time. Seriously, the season is almost over, this is no time for our supposed hero to be in the dark about what's going on. Oh, and Edo shows up. No important information is exchanged, so I don't care. Now Judai, Shou, and Kenzan are just randomly walking down the hall, openly discussing the fact that Saiou's actions aren't making any sense, even with the fact that Judai should know full and well about Saiou's Dissociative Identity Disorder due to what Mizuchi told him, and they come upon Asuka, who's just randomly standing in the middle of the hall way. Makes me wonder what she would have done if Judai hadn't come down that part of the hallway? Asuika gets right to the point, saying that she's here for the key. She explains that while Saiou did leave the key with Judai, now he wants it back, chop-chop. Judai points out that that doesn't make any sense, but Asuka's brain has been turned off, Saiou's word is her command. Judai says Asuka still isn't making any sense, and Shou and Kenzan are the first to note the brainwashing eyes. Yep, that's our Judai; so empathic, perceptive, and intuitive, that he needs to have the fact that Asuka is under double-strength brainwashing spelled out for him. And now Asuka formally challenges Judai to a duel; he wins, she'll give up on the key, but if she wins, she takes the key and becomes Saiou's lower shrine. Not sure that I get that, but whatever, it's just pretentious drivel. Judai still has no clue, owing to his gross idiocy, and then Fubuki randomly shows up! He then spells out, with big bold text and small words, that Saiou has put Asuka under his direct control, and if Judai doesn't beat her, she'll be like this forever.

And it is only now that Judai decides that he has a problem with Asuka being brainwashed declaring that he'll definitely wake her up. So, like with Misawa, this rings horribly hollow due to the fact that Judai takes no initiative and has to have everything spelled out for him before he'll even think about the fact that, hey, his friends being brainwashed is bad. Mind you, it's marginally better than with Manjoume, since this time the motivating factor isn't him mistreating his cards, but the sanctity of her mind. It's not much better, but I'll cling to whatever I can get. Asuka walks off, going on about how her White-Night combo will bring about the White-Night shrine, or something, I have no idea. So now Judai and company are sitting in the middle of the stairs, because there's no way that anyone could ever need to use them, and Judai's confident that his deck will be able to restore Asuka's heart. Shou wonders what all the talk about the White-Night Shrine was about, and redundantly warns Judai that Asuka will probably be using a completely different combo this time around. And then Fubuki gives Judai a card to use in his duel, Swing of Reminiscence. Oh hey, flashback to tiny Fubuki and tiny Asuka! Hey, hey, the last time they did this, the episode was actually awesome! Maybe this episode will actually be awesome too! And maybe I'll win the lottery! Anyway, back to the adorable flashback of adorableness, tiny Fubuki and tiny Asuka are dueling beneath the same giant tree as from the last flashback, and Fubuki plays the Swing of Reminisce card. Asuka really likes that card, and the duel goes on for a very long time, but ultimately Fubuki manages to be victorious. But, being the awesome big brother that he is, he assures Asuka that she's getting stronger all the time, and if she keeps doing her best like she is now, than she'll be able to use Swing of Reminiscence too.

Aww, that was delightfully heartwarming. Unfortunately, now we're back in the present. Fubuki explains that since he and Asuka share such powerful memories through that card, if Judai plays it, Asuka will definitely remember who she really is. Judai recognizes the power and passion of Fubuki's feelings, and accepts his card. And now Manjoume randomly shows up. It seems to me like that's the only way people on this show can show up; randomly. He's heard the whole thing and wants to help out, but Shou and Kenzan point out that since Manjoume was the one who defeated Asuka and forced her into the Association of Light in the first place, this is all his fault. Manjoume, as has been established back in episode 88, has no memory of anything he did while in the Association of Light, and thus has no idea what the idiot squad is talking about. blah blah blah, flashback to the episode from the ninth circle of hell, and Manjoume is in desperate disbelief that he could have done such a thing to his one true love, Asuka Tenjouin. He then asks his other one true love, Fubuki Tenjouin, to tell him it isn't true, that those jealous trolls are just lying and being big fat meanie heads. Fubuki has no sympathy for Manjoume's plight, and confirms that yes, you really did do that horrible thing to his beloved little sister, you jackass. Now, as amusing as that exchange was, it does bring up a certain question; if Shou and Kenzan were that upset with Manjoume for what he did to Asuka, why the frick didn't they do anything about it earlier? Once again, anything that isn't the dynamic between Asuka, Ryou, and Fubuki, rings hollow. Then Judai tries to assure Manjoume that it isn't really his fault, and Shou and Kenzan spontaneously change their tunes for no particular reason, saying that they would have done the same if they'd been brainwashed too. So, I guess Shou and Kenzan just felt like ragging on Manjoume, regardless of whether or not it actually made any sense to do so? *shrugs*

Blah blah blah, Manjoume tosses a card to Judai, saying that it embodies his burning hot feelings and can melt Asuka's icy heart, giving her a serious case of heartburn which will force her to forfeit the duel. Or, you know, restore her sanity. I like my version better. Oh, and let me guess, it's one of the Ojamas, isn't it? Oh hey, now it's time for the duel. Judai shows that he has the key with him, signifying that he'll keep his end of the bargain, Asuka wants to be Saiou's lower shrine, Judai swears he will wake her up, the duel begins, and...

EYECATCH!

Tense moment, and Asuka takes the first turn. She summons Snow Sprite with 1100 attack points, and reveals its effect; so long as it is on the field, the opponent can't activate spell cards from their hand, nor can they activate spell cards on the turn that they are set. With this, Asuka will seal Judai's spell cards, and then she sets a card to end her turn. Fubuki spells out the obvious to everyone that this isn't Asuka's original deck, no duh, and blah blah blah. Judai's turn, he declares that he'll play the card that Manjoume gave him, and what a shock, it's Ojama Black in defense position. And now Manjoume stands up and acts like a total goober, going on about how he realized that he's actually a black guy covered in dirt, and wow that does that come off wrong in English. Seriously, that's just...and he wants Asuka to realize the same thing and shake off Saiou's control. Fubuki is impressed by Manjoume's passion, but Asuka is not. She wonders what Judai's thinking, sending out such a weak monster against her, and Judai sets Negate Attack to end his turn. And now Fubuki's decided that Manjoume's getting a little too passionate about Asuka returning to 'him'. Man, you have to really piss off Fubuki to get that kind of response out of him. Manjoume tries to assure big brother Fubuki that when he said me, he meant all of them, and Fubuki tells him to knock it off with the big brother talk, and docks him ten points. Yes, I think we can safely say that Manjoume has lost the game, and so have we all. And now back to Asuka. She activates the Permanent Spell card White Night's Fort; so long as it is on the field, no one may activate trap cards on their opponent's turn. Thus, Judai's Negate Attack is now useless. Oh, there's also a bunch of Association of Light duelists there, but they don't do anything, so they don't matter. Except as a vehicle for Asuka to yell at them to stop being such wusses. Even when brainwashed, so long as she's dueling, Asuka's awesomeness manages to shine through.

Oh, and now Judai's feeling cold. Whatever. Asuka goes on about how the light reveals all, and then summons Illusion Ice Statue; when summoned, it's attack and defense power becomes equal to one other monster Asuka controls, and so long as it is on the field, it's the only monster the opponent can attack. It takes on Ice Sprite's form, and I really wish that Asuka had a stronger monster out to use for this. Don't get me wrong, all the card sealing is great, but the fact is that Judai won't have much trouble overcoming Asuka's monsters. That said, Asuka attacks and destroys Ojama Black, noise from the peanut gallery, and then she attacks directly for 1100 damage. Asuka laughs at Judai's suffering, but Judai is still resolute in his last second desire to save Asuka. But he still whines about the cold, so I still despise him. Blah blah blah, unfunny comic relief is unfunny, Judai draws and gets Swing of Reminiscence, and summons Sparkman. He attacks and destroys Illusion Ice Statue for 500 damage, blah blah blah, and Asuka recognizes that Judai wants to use a spell card, but he can't. So he sets Swing of Memories, ends his turn, and declares that his next turn will be warm. Asuka cares naught for Judai's brainless blathering, and not even Fubuki's impassioned pleas can reach her ears, for she only hears Saiou's words. It is now that Saiou has gone too far, he's hurt Fubuki's feelings! Asuka's turn, she activates Icicle Sacrifice, giving up a monster zone to special summon an Icicle Token, which has the ability to count as two sacrifices for a sacrifice summon. Thus, she sacrifices it to summon the level 7 White Night's Queen...which has only 2100 attack points, which is rather low for that level. Maybe it's effect will compensate? Once per turn, it gets to destroy one card that's been set on the field. That's...not good enough, given that attack power. Oh well, it'll have to do for the moment. I would have preferred a "Once per turn, discard one card from your hand to destroy one card on the field" effect, which would be fine since Ice Night Queen can't be special summoned anyway. But, if it had that effect, Asuka would win this turn, and we can't have that, now can we?

All that aside, Asuka destroys the face-down Swing of Reminiscence, and Fubuki is driven to tears. Don't worry Fubuki, just 87 more episodes to go, and your suffering will be over. Judai yells out that the true Asuka still remembers Fubuki, but Asuka proclaims that this is her true identity, and they'd best beware her true power. White Night's Queen attacks and destroys Sparkman for 500 damage, and then Snow Sprite attacks directly for 1100 damage, leaving Judai with just 1300 life points. Noise from the peanut gallery, Judai falls to his knees, and Asuka says that he should just surrender already and get it over with. Judai thinks about how he'd failed to carry Manjoume and Fubuki's feelings, and now he needs to figure out how to melt Asuka's heart on his own. End episode.

NEXT TIME! The duel continues, Judai whines that Asuka isn't cool anymore, and oh hey, I think Seto Kaiba's going to sue someone! EPISODE TITLE, WHITE NIGHT DRAGON! JUDAI VS. ASUKA (PART 2) card of the week is white night's queen, never released.

There were a few bright moments in there, but ultimately it all falls apart when even the slightest scrutiny is employed. Really, the whole episode should have just been Asuka and Fubuki flashbacks. That would have been fun.
