Where I rewatch Yugioh GX, Episode 109

So, to recap, in lieu of any actual dueling screentime, Shou will be used as a hostage while Judai takes all of his screentime. Also, O' Brian uses a gun deck that is on fire. Now to some new material, PROFESSOR COBRA is pleased as he gazes into his lava lamp of PURE EVIL, and does not care if O' Brian dies in the course of this insane endeavor. Because Judai's duel energy is just that valuable. You can't see it, but I'm rolling my eyes so damn hard right now.
TITLE SCREEN! JUDAI AND THE FIERY O'BRIAN oh, that's how it is eh?
The cable has now begun to snap, it is only a matter of time before Shou falls to an incredibly painful death. O' Brian reminds everyone that if they try anything he'll drop Shou into the ocean right here and now, and Judai assures everyone that he'll totally win and save Shou. Judai's turn, he summons Flare Scarab. O' Brian recognizes Flare Scarab from Judai's duel with Johan, and somehow thinks that Judai is not one who'd recklessly attack head-on. Because apparently he hasn't been paying attention, nor did he notice that the whole point of this hostage situation is to get Judai fired up and constantly on the attack. Of course, Judai does attack, and so O' Brian activates his permanent trap card Firewall. No, this doesn't keep the hackers from vandalizing the scripts; whenever the opponent attacks directly, he can remove a Fire Attribute monster in his grave from play to negate that attack. So he removes both Volcanic Bullets in his grave to negate Featherman's and Flare Scarab's direct attacks, and so Judai ends his turn. Noise from the peanut gallery, Johan wonders what O' Brian is aiming at, and O' Brian mocks Judai for thinking his attack would work. Judai points out that O' Brian didn't summon a monster, and it wouldn't have been any fun if he hadn't attacked. Seriously, this is pathological; Shou is in a deathtrap from which he can't escape, and Judai's still making "having fun" his number one priority. Shou is not nearly as angry as he should be as he reminds Judai of his predicament, and O' Brian repeats stuff we already know. He takes his turn, pays 500 life points to keep Firewall on the field, and now he plays Fire Soul; Judai gets to draw a card, and O' Brian gets to remove a Fire monster in his deck from play, dealing half its attack power as damage to Judai. He chooses Hell Flame Emperor with 2700 attack points, so Judai will take 1350 points of damage, and O' Brian thinks to himself that this is a mere candleflame compared to his deck's true power. But, what is this? Why is O' Brian enjoying this? This is just a mission, not for fun!
Okay, seriously, Judai, knock it off. Stop being an ass. O' Brian determines that on his next turn Judai will sacrifice his weak monsters for a strong one, Neos. He spells out for us his response to this, saying he'll activate Burial From a Different Dimension to return his fire monsters to his grave so that he can re-use Firewall's effect. And if Judai tries to destroy Firewall, he'll just set Firetrap, which negates and destroys an effect that would destroy a permanent trap card. Now let's what Judai does to screw all that up. Also, some drivel about Judai being on the defensive, which could come off as projection on O' Brian's part, but the writers are not nearly that clever. Johan notes that O' Brian has become absorbed and so he and Kenzan sneak around to go rescue Shou, and Judai takes his turn. Judai plays Fake Hero, special summoning Neos from his hand so he can contact fuse for Flare Neos, exactly like in his last duel, which was just the previous duel we saw. Repetitive duel choreography? In Yugioh GX? That's unpossible! Also unpossible is them continuing to use that wretched soundtrack. Kenzan is now convinced that Judai will win this turn, and Johan is even dumber than Judai, since he doesn't seem to realize that Contact Fusion will get around Fake Hero's limitations. Seriously, he pulled this same exact combo only two episodes, why does this catch anyone off guard? Anyway, with all the magic and traps on the field Flare Neos rises to 4500 attack points, Judai attacks, and O' Brian calls him a moron. He activates Burial From Another Dimension just like he said he would, and removes Volcanic Bullet to negate Flare Neos's attack. Judai attacks with Featherman, O' Brian removes the other Volcanic Bullet to negate that attack, but Judai pulls a brand-new card out of his ass, Contact Out; it's basically De-Fusion, but for Contact Fusion summons. So Flare Neos goes away, and Flare Scarab and Neos come back to the field, and they can both attack.
O' Brian is horrified that he was outwitted by Judai, and he is right to be so horrified. Neos attacks, O' Brian removes Hell Flame Emperor from play to negate it, and now Judai attacks directly with Flare Scarab, and O' Brian's run out of monsters to remove from play. We go over Flare Scarab's effect AGAIN, O' Brian takes 1700 points of damage, and Judai is excited that one of his attacks finally worked, and ends his turn. Noise from the peanut gallery, and Shou finally realizes that there is no conflict between a heated passionate duel and a respectful...somehow. I mean, maybe I'm just crazy, but if I were in Shou's situation, I wouldn't be engaging in alleged deep personal truths. Mind you, the whole thing would have worked better if it weren't so obviously forced. Blah blah blah, Judai is so amazing he can teach valuable life lessons without saying a word, and the cable snaps some more, and I'm beginning to wonder exactly how Johand and Kenzan plan on saving Shou anyway. Johan says he'll think of something, and I'm already working on Shou's eulogy. It'll be a short one. Hee.
EYECATCH!
Yes, PROFESSOR COBRA, gaze into the lava lamp of PURE EVIL, and restate things that we already know. Back to the duel, and...seriously, a twig? That was your plan Johan? Use a twig to jam the grinder that is breaking down a metal cable? Yeah, I don't know why I thought you were smarter than Judai, you truly are his clone in every respect. Kenzan is worried about O' Brian noticing all the noise behind him, but Johan says that's not an issue anymore, he's totally absorbed in the duel. Yep, O' Brian's pissed that Judai outsmarted him, as well he should be, and more flashbacks. Campside fire at night, and O' Brian asks his dad if a soldier really does have to obey orders without question, like faithful dogs. O' Brian's dad says that you can make an exception to save your own hide, which seems a bit off; shouldn't that be to sacrifice yourself for a friend, comrade, fellow soldier sort of thing? And I'm really not sure how this applies here, but hey, let's go along and pretend that this is some sort of meaningful development of O' Brian's character. Yes yes, Judai is the messiah and makes us see the truth of ourselves, we get it! But in any event, O' Brian decides that the whole hostage thing was stupid, and turns off the buzz-saw. Everyone's shocked, and O' Brian says he'll show Judai what his Vocanic Burn deck can really do. PROFESSOR COBRA is shocked as he looks into the lava lamp of PURE EVIL, and O' Brian takes his turn. He pays 500 life points to keep Firewall on the field, and then plays Blasting Vein; this destroys a face-down spell or trap card to draw two cards. Furthermore, if Fire Trap gets destroyed, O' Brian can draw an additional card. so now he's got three new cards in his hand, and with that new hand, he sends Blaze Cannon to the grave to activate Blaze Cannon Trident. Judai's excited, and O' Brian discards Volcanic Backshot for Blaze Cannon Trident; this causes three of them to be shot and destroy all of Judai's monsters. PROFESSOR COBRA does not approve of these tactics, O' Brian is just supposed to be bait!
Seriously, PROFESSOR COBRA, you should calm down. Listen to some Kenny G, take a bubble bath, sip on some chai tea. And now O' Brian explains in detail exactly what happened; Blaze Cannon Trident is like Blaze Cannon, with the addition of dealing 500 damage when it destroys a monster. Furthermore, when Volcanic Backshot is sent to the grave by this effect, O' Brian got to send the other two Backshots in his deck to the grave to destroy Judai's other monsters, and for every Backshot sent to the grave, Judai will take 500 damage. So that's 2000 points of damage and all of Judai's monsters destroyed. More noise from the peanut gallery, and seriously, you guys can just pull Shou up now, it's not like he's heavy or anything. YES, YES, WE GET IT, JUDAI IS AMAZING AND HE IMPROVES THE LIVES OF ALL THOSE HE MEETS, SHUT UP ALREADY! I'm sorry, but this is just getting ridiculous. And no, I don't buy it, at all. Yuugi, I can buy as someone who helps others improve themselves just by being around them. Judai? Not one fucking bit. Blah blah blah, the rope snaps, but Johan and Kenzan are quick to save him. Judai's over the whole hostage situation thing pretty easy, and tells O' Brian that his Hero deck hasn't been beaten yet. Blah blah blah, more drivel passing itself off as analysis, and O' Brian sets two more cards to end his turn. Judai summons Wildman, which is not affected by trap cards, so he attacks directly with impunity. And now we get to see what O' Brian is about to do, before he does it. Let's see, he'll activate Volcanic Force, which will apparently summon Volcanic Devil with 3000 attack points, which will then destroy Wildman and defeat Judai. And then O' Brian notices PROFESSOR COBRA'S hidden camera. And now he's back to the mission being most important, despite the earlier "epiphany". Wow, what a convenient plot device to make sure that Judai will win, even though there's no longer anything at stake and no reason why he can't lose.
So instead he'll activate the Quick Spell Crazy Fire; by paying 500 life points and destroying his Blaze Cannon (Trident), he'll blow up all monsters on the field and then special summon a Crazy Fire token with 1000 attack points. But, O' Brian is still apparently aiming to win, so why is he going for this risky, convoluted combo instead of sticking with the sure thing? Show, you're not being consistent! Is O' Brian more interested in the mission, or in winning? O' Brian notes that Judai's face down card, the one he set back on his first turn, must activate when a monster is destroyed by a card effect, and yep, it's Elemental Mirage. So yeah, Wildman comes back, he attacks the Crazy Fire token, and thus wins the duel. All because O' Brian refused to activate Volcanic Force for no reason at all. O' Brian hopes that this was good enough for PROFESSOR COBRA, and says out loud 'mission complete'. Suddenly, the Dis-Belt kicks in and drains all of O' Brian's energy. The same is true of Judai, and he passes out. Yes, that was a very nice shot of the lava lamp of PURE EVIL, thank you for reminding us that it exists. Judai's in the nurse's office, Ayukawa can't believe that Judai was in a normal duel, blah blah blah, and Judai wakes up. Ah, Judai sounds so tired. It'd be so easy to...no, I won't do that. Shou is a blubbering wreck, promises he'll never lose sight of his path again, and for some reason decides he's not fit for Obelisk Blue after all. Well, that was entirely predictable and entirely pointless. Woo. And again, where is this blather about "Kaiser Shou" coming from? This has never, even when he was a snotty brat, a part of Shou's characterization. It just comes out of nowhere and makes no sense. Judai goes back to sleep, which is perfectly normal for him, and yes show, that is a very nice lava lamp of PURE EVIL. Why do you keep bringing it up? End episode.
NEXT TIME! Kenzan's Dino DNA compels him to attack Jim Crocodile Cook, and Jim uses fossil monsters. Wow, that's not derivative at all. EPISODE TITLE, TYRANNO KENZAN AND JIM OF THE FOSSIL DRAGON card of the week is blaze cannon trident.
Inconsistent characterization, and the repetition of "Judai is so great" is what characterizes this episode. And why did they keep cutting back to the lava lamp of PURE EVIL? Were the animators really that proud of it?
