A recap of the last episode, because it was just so hard to follow, and...

TITLE SCREEN! VS. DARKNESS (PART 2) AN ATTACK FROM THE RED-EYES DARKNESS DRAGON will the new dragon attack with terrible poetry?

So after Judai's completed the world's most ridiculously over-dramatic card draw ever, everyone just sort of stands there for about ten seconds, to make up for Judai's egregious abuse of the animation budget. Judai again promises to rescue Shou and Hayato, while "Darkness" wonders if Judai will even be able to stand much longer, and Judai proceeds to be a little snot by performing an emotional 180 and declare that he's having such a fun duel; if I were either Shou or Asuka, I would smack Judai around for that. If I were Hayato I would leap into the lava. So Judai finally takes his turn by playing Pot of Greed. Yeah. Then he plays Defusion, separating Rampart Gunner into Clayman and Burst Lady, a move he never could have done if "Darkness" had destroyed Rampart Gunner like he should have. Oh, and since Rampart Gunner has left the field, Attachment Dragon is destroyed and sent to the grave of "Darkness". Then Judai plays Fusion Sage to add Fusion from his deck to his hand, and fuses together Clayman on the field with Sparkman in his hand to get Thunder Giant. Since Red-Eyes has the same attack power as Thunder Giant, Thunder can't destroy it with its effect, so Judai rams Thunder into Red-Eyes, destroying both monsters. Then Judai attacks directly with Burst Lady, which "Darkness" weathers no problem.

Judai comments on how "Darkness" doesn't flinch, while "Darkness" calls this the essence of a Duel of Darkness. Oh, but Judai's not done with his turn yet, and you're going to love this. See, believe it or not, he plays Mirage of Nightmare! You know, wouldn't it be hilarious if, as he activates Emergency Provisions to get red of Mirage of Nightmare so he doesn't end up discarding all those cards he drew, his opponent activated a trap card to negate and destroy it, like Magic Jammer? And so Judai was left with a now worse-than-useless Mirage of Nightmare that made him keep discarding huge chunks of his deck every turn? And for that matter, what the hell is Judai doing using a card called "Mirage of Nightmare" anyway? I thought he was supposed to be all sunny and bright and heroic and energetic and shit, why's he using a card that sounds so horrible? Well, it's all academic anyway, because if the Yugioh Wikia is to be trusted, this is the last episode where Judai uses Mirage of Nightmare. Don't worry though, Judai will get at least three new repetitive dueling strategies before too long, because letting other people get the chance to duel is for losers!

Where was I? Oh yeah, Judai plays Mirage of Nightmare, and Judai sets a card, no points for which card he just set. "Darkness" takes his turn, Judai abuses Mirage of Nightmare, activates Emergency Provisions like the prick that he is, and recovers 1000 life points. Asuka is clearly being paid to think this was a brilliant move, and "Darkness" summons Mirage Dragon. He attacks and destroys Burst Lady for 400 points of damage, and Judai drops down to his knees in pain. Come on, can't we at least get him thinking that his arm's become a bloody stump, or his lung's have caved in? This is the tamest Duel of Darkness I've ever seen! Everyone cheers Judai on, and Judai summons Bubbleman, because he didn't have enough cards already, amirite? He plays Silent Dead to bring Sparkman back in defense position, and then uses the field spell card Fusion Gate, fusing Bubbleman, Sparkman, and Featherman into Tempester. Be honest, who didn't see that coming halfway through my description? So Judai destroys Mirage Dragon for 1200 points of damage.

"Darkness" says that progress means nothing in a Duel of Darkness, only which of them is left standing in the end; this is advice he should have listened to in the last episode, as Judai would never have been able to get this far if he'd just destroyed Rampart Gunner when he had the chance. But hey, Judai's opponents making stupid moves to facilitate his victory, that's just business as usual for Yugioh GX! Judai proclaims he'll be the last one standing, which would be much more impressive if he were someone other than Judai, and then sets a card to end his turn. "Darkness" draws his card, and then holds his card out significantly, pontificating that he can hear them, the spirits of his fallen dragons. Judai tells "Darkness" to stop being such a creeper, and now the roars of dragons echo across the island. The lava keeps shaping itself into dragons, and "Darkness" proclaims that the dragons wish to scorch the earth once more, and so he'll summon the ULTIMATE DRAGON to fulfill their desires. What, he's going to summon Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon?

"Darkness": NO WAY, MY MONSTER IS WAY BETTER THAN THAT PIECE OF SHIT!

Cypsiman2: Whatever you say, poser.

So first he summons Dark Dragon Chick, which manifests as a baby dragon peering out of the cracks of its egg. Then he activates its effect, sacrificing it to special summon another Red-Eyes Black Dragon from his hand. And now, "Darkness" claims, the evolution of the Red-Eyes Black Dragon will achieve its ultimate form.

Excuse me while I contact the makers of Digimon, this'll just take a second...

So "Darkness" sacrifices Red-Eyes Black Dragon, visually represented by it diving into the lava, and out comes the Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon, which has like six wings. Also, the death cries of the fallen dragons becomes its blood, or in terms that are actually relevant to the game, it gains 300 attack points for every Dragon in his grave. There are seven, so that makes a grand total of 4500 attack points.

I think this might be the strongest monster without the use of Power Bond that's been summoned on this show.

"Darkness" tries to be all threatening and scary, and then attacks Tempester, which if successful will defeat and kill Judai. So right on schedule...

EYECATCH!

Also right on schedule, Negate Attack. So yeah, we were all worried (or in my case, hopeful) over nothing. Yep, that's one of the big problems with the Yugioh card game; destruction and negation and remove-from-play effects are so prevalent that all the effort you put into summoning your super high attack power monster, is trivially easy to get rid of. But enough whining about the card game, more whining about the shitty show! "Darkness" is not happy about having to end his turn without killing Judai, but thems the breaks when the writers are in love.

Meanwhile, at the lighthouse, Kaiser Ryou feels a reaction from his key and looks to the volcano. Misawa is in his room, working on his computer, when he feels a reaction from his key. Manjoume is in bed, trying to sleep, but Ojama Yellow is being an annoying little shit. Oh, and he feels a reaction from his key. Chronos is sound asleep, so he don't know nothing about nothing, and Daitokuji is already looking up at the volcano, or at least as best he can with his eyes closed at any rate. And Samejima's in his office, thinking that maybe entrusting the fate of the world to a bunch of teenagers, one of whom has a mental age significantly lower than all the rest, may have been a terrible idea. YOU THINK???

And now back to the duel, where Judai is taking his turn. He summons Friendog in defense position, switches Tempester to defense position, since he has no way of actually defeating Darkness Dragon. Well, until he pulls the winning card out of his ass anyway. And again, I wouldn't mind nearly so much if other people were allowed to duel AND win more than once in a blue moon. "Darkness" is all 'you're trying to buy time, but time isn't something you have in a Duel of Darkness', a point he illustrates with Judai's whiny little friends. Shou and Hayato are all 'don't worry about us!', Judai and Asuka say their names, and "Darkness" asks if they're done saying their goodbyes. Judai tells him to hurry up and draw, getting halfway close to an accurate emotional response.

So Darkness draws his card and summons Spear Dragon, which can penetrate defense but is switched to defense after attacking. He uses it to gut Friendog for 700 points of damage, but Judai gets back Fusion and Wildman. Then, in order to prevent Tempester from preventing its destruction with its effect, Darkness plays Cyclone to destroy Fusion Gate, so now Judai has no other cards on the field. Thus, Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon destroys Tempester, "Darkness" ends his turn, and Judai falls flat on his face. So much for that 'strength' of yours, huh Judai? You're no Jounouchi, that's for damn sure.

Asuka, seeing that things are up shit creek, takes some initiative and tells "Darkness" to put a stop to the duel. "Darkness" asks who she is, and I wonder if he's only just now noticed the presence of the buxom blond girl in the tiny miniskirt? Asuka gives him her name, and that she'll hand over her key in exchange for Judai, Shou, and Hayato's lives. "Darkness" quietly repeats Asuka's name, just in case there are some plankton watching and some of the dumber ones among them still haven't figured out that "Darkness" is Fubuki. Oh, and Asuka even offers to be sealed into the card, just to sweeten the deal.

Personally I'd rather her offer to take over the duel for Judai, but whatever, at least she's trying to be more than just a bystander. This is of course rebuffed by Judai, who doesn't want such a 'passionate' duel taken from him. Yes, Judai is on the verge of death, and all he can think about is how exciting it all is. What. A. Twit. Judai draws his card, Shou and Hayato are about to be killed by the lava, and Judai summons Wildman. Then he plays bullshit support card Wild Half; when you have Wildman on the field, you can reduce an opponent's monster's original attack power in half, and special summons a 'wild-half' token with the same attack power to the opponent's side of the field. So Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon turns into two weaker monsters, but thanks to its effect, each Darkness Dragon still has 3300 attack points. Then Judai plays, what else, Fusion, using Wildman and Edgeman to summon the brand new, buy it in stores already, Wild Jaggyman, with 2600 attack points and the ability to attack each of the enemy's monsters once during the battle phase. If you guessed that "Darkness" would be all haughty and dismissive, you would be correct. If you also guessed that Judai would be an annoying little snot and activate Skyscraper, you would also be correct.

Long story short, Judai attacks all of "Darkness's" monsters, wins, and "Darkness" screams in pain as lava bursts up all around everyone. Judai collapses, Asuka screams because that's what girls do don't you know, and now everyone's on the side of the volcano where there isn't any lava. Judai is still unconscious, Asuka says he'll pull through, and then Asuka picks up a card that has the mask of "Darkness" all wrapped up in chains. She calls it "Darkness's" soul, and now that the Tuxedo Mask effect is no longer being applied, she is able to go over to the duelist who was once "Darkness", and is all shocked, shocked I tell you! Who could it possibly be???

Manjoume, Misawa, and Kaiser Ryou show up, and after checking up on Judai, again, Kaiser Ryou heads over to Asuka, who is embracing the mysterious stranger. She says through her tears that he had another soul inside him, and now that that soul's been sealed, the original soul's been left behind. Kaiser Ryou, needing the obvious spelled out for him from all the idiot balls that have been smashed into his skull while he was off-screen, and Asuka says its her brother Fubuki!

SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME PLOT TWIST! I NEVER SAW THAT COMING, I TOTALLY THOUGHT THAT "DARKNESS" WAS TAIZAN OUT FOR REVENGE, OR SOMETHING!

Oh, and the sun rises, bringing with it the end of the episode.

NEXT TIME! Fubuki and Judai are now hospitalized in the nurse's office, and...no. I refuse to believe this. This is some manner of trailer trickery. I fucking refuse to believe that the writers would do THAT! Surely the writers have not yet lost their sense of narrative decency. Surely, even they have their limits. EPISODE TITLE, CHRONOS VS. VAMPIRE CAMULA. Which is obviously a lie, Camula is obviously just a cosplayer, I roll to disbelieve...

Well, it would have been a much better episode if A. the duel wasn't rigged so that Judai would win, and B. if they'd done a better job of concealing the fact that it was Fubuki under the mask. But otherwise, it was decent by GX standards. But hey, if the preview for the next episode isn't lying, then we'll be plumbing new depths of terribleness in the realm of Yugioh GX. The GX stands for 'desecrating the Yugioh canon at every turn'.
