Where I rewatch Yugioh GX, Episode 46

Shot of the outside, back inside the lab, Daitokuji saying his flesh was destroyed long ago, and with Alchemy he created this new body for his soul.
TITLE SCREEN! AN EARTH-WATER-FIRE-WIND FUSION! ELIXIRIR why do i get the feeling that whoever wrote this episode has a hard-on for alchemy?
Another pointless shot of the pillars of light, and we're back in the lab. Daitokuji has now decided to provide us with his backstory; he traveled the world as an Alchemist, seeking the Philosopher's Stone. I'm guessing he never tried Hogwarts...he exposits about the Philosopher's Stone and what it can do, and how lots of famous people throughout history have sought it. Then he says that he "accepted someone's orders, and did some research into it", which doesn't seem entirely consistent with what he said a moment ago, maybe the translation is a bit off, I don't know. The point is is that Daitokuji says that his research drew him to Duel Monsters the same way that Pegasus was, which is just so far off the fucking mark it is beyond belief. I mean, do I really need to go into detail about how Pegasus came to reinvent Duel Monsters in its modern form? No, no I don't, because despite what the writers may be assuming, we are not morons. So Daitokuji came upon those stone tablets that he has in his lab of the Three Mythic Demons, the ones that neither Judai, Shou, or Hayato bothered to even notice. And where did Daitokuji find these tablets exactly? NO FUCKING CLUE! The important part, in the estimation of the writers anyway, was that Daitokuji contracted an incurable illness. You know, the kind all soap opera actors contract.
So he went and created a homunculus to put his soul into, but that was only a temporary measure, and the homunculus has started to break down, his face itself beginning to crack. However, before he dies, he must gain control over the ultimate spirits for the one who supported his research, and Judai realizes he's talking about the Three Mythic Demons. Yes, Daitokuji believes that if he had the power of the Three Mythic Demons, he'd be able to create the Philosopher's Stone! I guess no one ever mentioned to him the part where Alchemy is all just supposed to be a metaphor for your own personal journey through life, and the Philosopher's Stone standing for the moment when you become fully fulfilled. But whatever, it's still better than Camula wanting to revive the Vampire race. Judai is horrified that Daitokuji has been deceiving them all this time, Daitokuji puts Pharaoh back down, and declares that they're going to resume the duel, calling it Judai's final exam for his class. If he fails, the souls of his friends will become ingredients for his research.
Daitokuji takes his turn and plays Chaos Greed; when there are no cards in your grave, and at least four of your cards removed from play, you can draw two cards. Daitokuji sets two cards, and then ends his turn. Judai goes over the situation and how Elemental Absorber will negate his every attack, so he takes his turn and plays Pot of Greed. Typical. He gets Fusion and Clay Wrap, so he summons Clayman, equips it with Clay Wrap, and then plays Fusion, bringing out Rampart Gunner and destroying Elemental Absorber with Clay Wrap's effect. Daitokuji calls this a magnificent use of Fusion (not really), and that Fusion is the entirety of the potential Judai possesses. Judai yells at him to stop acting like he's still his professor, and Daitokuji thinks to himself that Judai's true powers have yet to be awakened, that power that Judai is unaware of lies dormant within him.
...
Excuse me while I go vomit up everything I've eaten over the past two weeks.

All right, where were we? Right, Judai declares his attack with Rampart Gunner, and then Daitokuji commands Judai to closely watch the ultimate alchemy that he's attained, and activates the permanent trap Macrocosmos; he removes Chaos Distill on the field from play, it explodes, light washes over the field, and when we can see again it now looks like everyone is floating in space. Daitokuji says that their duel has been taken into the cosmos, beyond the human world, and I roll my eyes. Then he says that Macrocosmos allows him to special summon Helios - The Primordial Sun from his deck, which has 1100 attack points. There is a rumbling as the "planets" move around, and then we see Manjoume, Asuka, and Fubuki trapped in them. By the way, why did Daitokuji go after Fubuki? If it was to shut him up before he gave everything away, he certainly took his sweet time about that! Daitokuji repeats his spiel about the top and the bottom, calling this the truth of the world as written in the Emerald Tablet. He elaborates, saying that all things are born of one substance and are connected to one another and influence each other. The world of humans, the micro-cosmos, and the world of the sky, the macro-cosmos.
Yeah, Daitokuji? In the world of ACTUAL SCIENCE, we like to call what you're talking about, Atomic Theory and the principle of Cause and Effect. You're just dressing it up in flowery terms and throwing in some superfluous bullshit about outer space into it. Normally I would not bother about critiquing him about this, except that Judai is all 'so humans and outer space are connected?', and Daitokuji responds by saying, and I quote, "Being strongly influenced by modern-day science, you all cannot possibly fathom it." Fuck you Daitokuji, fuck you so goddamn hard. Did you ever stop to wonder why science took hold and alchemy was only the hobby of rich cranks? Because science actually accomplished shit, while alchemists just puttered around and did nothing, save giving way to chemistry, which answered real questions and made real, practical accomplishments that people could use. Also, as Carl Sagen so eloquently put it in the Cosmos miniseries, since the matter that the earth is made of was created in huge supernovas billions of years ago, we can say that we are made of star-stuff, which is far more grandiose, moving, and interesting, than Daitokuji's Microcosmos/Macrocosmos bullshit. Or, to sum all that up, fuck you, whoever wrote this episode, and fuck your boner for alchemy.
So anyway, Daitokuji claims that alchemy makes the impossible possible, opens his eyes for the first fucking time in the entire series, and then Judai says he doesn't know shit about magic or alchemy, but he won't let Daitokuji get away with what he did to Manjoume, Asuka, and Fubuki. So Daitokuji activates his quick-spell Planet Alignment; when you control Helios, destroy all of your opponent's monsters and inflict 300 damage. So boom goes Rampart Gunner, Judai sets a card, and ends his turn. Daitokuji draws his card and plays it, Yellow Process - Citrinitas, to sacrifice Helios to special summon Helios Duo Megistus, which gains 200 attack points for each monster that Daitokuji has removed from play, and while it wasn't mentioned, Macrocosmos is still removing Daitokuji's cards from play the same way that Chaos Distill did. So there are 12 monsters that Daitokuji's removed from play, so Helios Duo has 2400 attack points. He declares his attack, and...
EYECATCH!
So Judai activates his trap card, A Hero Appears, and Daitokuji picks the center card, which is of course Edgeman. Judai special summons it, but Daitokuji continues his attack anyway, and so he takes 200 points of damage as Duo Megistus is destroyed. However, Duo Megistus revives itself when it is destroyed, and gains 300 attack points. So now that he has the new, 2700 attack power Helios Duo, he attacks again and destroys Edgeman for 100 points of damage. Now it's back to Judai, He summons Bubbleman, draws another two cards with its bullshit effect, then plays Fusion Recovery to get back Fusion and Clayman from his grave, and then he plays Fusion, combining Bubbleman and Featherman into....
Umm...
I...
Wha....
I...just...find it hard to believe that they went there. I mean, just...wow.
So, um, yeah, Judai summons Elemental Hero Sailorman, who has 1400 attack points, and seriously, Judai, is there something you'd like to share with all of us? You don't need worry, Duel Academia is a very warm and accepting, they will not hold this against you. Hell, you'll probably be even more popular, hard as that would be to believe. Judai sets two cards (Mirror Gate and Flute of Summoning Winged Kuriboh), and then declares that Mariner can attack directly so long as he has cards in his spell/trap zone. So he does, Daitokuji takes 1400 points of damage, and then declares that Judai is a genius of Fusion, which is hideous insult against geniuses of all varieties throughout all realities, fictional or otherwise. He says that Fusion is the power hidden within Judai, and proof that he is a top-notch alchemist.
Umm, don't you have to be smart, and study hard, and apply yourself to be an alchemist? I'm pretty fucking sure that's the case, and I know that Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, would back me up on this.
Judai demands to know What the Fuck Daitokuji is talking about, he's just playing cards for fucks sake, it doesn't mean anything, but Daitokuji says that Fusion, which takes weak monsters and makes them strong, and Alchemy, which turns base metals into gold, are one and the same! Yeah, I'm sure of it now, the degrading condition of Daitokuji's homunculus has caused him to lose his mind and not realize what he's saying. So yeah, apparently the endless ability of an alchemist lies dormant in Judai, who's a master of fusion. Marvelous. Judai is in shock, Daitokuji says that this battle will decide who the ultimate alchemist is, and then he takes his turn, declaring his attack with Helios Duo Megistus. Judai activates Mirror Gate, switching control of their monsters, so Daitokuji activates the quick-spell Grand Cross, which can only be activated while you control Macrocosmos; it destroys all monsters on the field and deals 300 damage to the opponent. So, basically Planet Alignment all over again. Oh, and Helios Duo Megistus revives with another 300 attack points, or 3000. He declares his attack again, and Judai activates Flute of Summoning Kuriboh, and Winged Kuriboh is destroyed for no damage.
Daitokuji ends his turn, Judai summons Clayman in defense position, and sets one card to end his turn. Judai goes over how shitty his situation is, and Daitokuji declares that he will usher in the final process of his alchemy, and he plays Red Process - Rubedo, sacrificing Helios Duo Megistus to special summon Helios Tris Megistus, which gains 300 attack power for every monster that Daitokuji's removed from play, so with 13 that becomes 3900. Daitokuji attacks and destroys Clayman, Judai activates Hero Signal, special summoning Sparkman in defense position. However, Daitokuji reveals that Tris Megistus can attack again, so long as the opponent has a monster on the field, so boom goes Sparkman as well.
At long last, Judai feels despair as he encounters a duel that he does not believe he can win. Sure, it was extraordinarily annoying to keep hearing Daitokuji go on about how great alchemy is and how science sucks and how Judai is totally a great alchemist, but hey, Judai's about to lose! What could possibly go wrong!
Oh fuck, I just said that, didn't I?
Judai laments that he can't rescue Asuka, Manjoume, and Fubuki, and then says that Daitokuji was dead wrong about him having an alchemist's ability. He has nothing in his hand or on his field, so he has no materials to work with. Daitokuji then asks if Judai is the same as he was at the beginning of the year, and that leads into a flashback montage. Blah, blah, blah, all the memories he forged with his friends, Daitokuji thinks to himself how Judai still has what he didn't have one year ago, and Judai realizes that what he has is the power of friendship, and that's the real power of friendship! Of course, Judai's power of friendship is the kind where no one else can ever dare overshadow him, the kind where he's ten times better than everyone else and they just prop him up. You know, the sucky kind that the original Yugioh managed to avoid despite the fact that the main mode of conflict resolution was in fact a one-on-one card game, because Kazuki Takahashi knew what the fuck he was doing.
So Judai draws his card and plays it, Miracle Fusion! Yes, this brand new card that he just pulled out of his ass lets him remove Elemental Heroes in his grave from play to perform a fusion summon, so he removes Clayman, Bubbleman, Burst Lady, and Bubbleman to summon the Ultimate Elemental Hero (not even remotely), Elemental Hero Elixirir, and between the rainbows as the heroes fuse together and the sheer muscle mass on Elixirir, I don't think I need to say anything more. Oh, and Elixirir's effect causes all cards that have been removed from play to return to their decks, so now Helios Tris Megistus has an attack power of zero, Elixirir has an attack power of 2900, and there's this very bizarre rapt look of rapture on Daitokuji's face that I don't think the animators thought through. Or maybe they did...
So yeah, Daitokuji loses, the Eye of Wdjat on the Emerald Tablet shatters, and all the pillars of light disappear, the Spirit Gates seal themselves shut, and Manjoume, Fubuki, and Asuka are returned to where they were before they were captured. Judai walks up to Daitokuji, Daitokuji says Judai passed with flying colors, that the whole alchemy turning stuff into gold thing was just the surface phenomenon, the real goal is to change people's hearts. Yeah, you sure did a great job of that, Daitokuji, *rolls eyes*, and Daitokuji says that his goal has been accomplished...somehow. He says that the one who funded his research has gained a mighty power that has clouded his mind, and that an even greater disaster is coming to the island. Oh, and Daitokuji's homunculus is breaking down as he talks. So he claims that he was nurturing a power to prevent that disaster, and that power is of course, and I don't buy this horse-shit for a second. Oh, and he gives Judai the Emerald Tablet, just before he crumbles into dust. As does Daitokuji's original body. Tiny ball of light emerges from where Daitokuji once stood, presumably his soul, and Pharaoh bats at it with his paw. Blah blah blah, and...Pharaoh swallows Daitokuji's soul.
...
How does that even begin to make sense in the mind of the person who came up with it?
NEXT TIME! So yeah, Judai's big man on campus now, and apparently Manjoume has now decided that he's in love with Asuka. Which for some reason motivates him to steal the Spirit Keys. EPISODE TITLE, ASUKA VS. MANJOUME! CYBER ANGEL -BENTEN-
Hey, instead of having wasted all that time on that alchemy drivel, here's some questions that Daitokuji could have answered; WHY THE FUCK DID HE HAVE DAITOKUJI SENT TO THE WORLD OF DARKNESS? WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE REST OF THE MISSING STUDENTS? WHO THE FUCK WAS IN CHARGE OF THE SEVEN STARS TO BEGIN WITH? Those are just a few of the questions that the writers thought weren't as important as showing off how much they are into alchemy. Isn't it fascinating, seeing the kinds of priorities that these writers have?

Date: 2010-06-17 06:07 am (UTC)So...Daitokuji can't decide whether he's evil or ambiguous, but he knows Juudai is a Stu. That's about what I've taken away from this episode. But was he out for himself or doing evil things in order to help Juudai prepare to defeat something more evil, or... I'm confused. It could have been an interesting bit of characterization, but it's too messy as it is.
It seems that the next episode will be painful.

Date: 2010-06-17 06:18 am (UTC)Yeah, you can see why I took the direction with Daitokuji in my fic. I just...there was room for something good, but whoever was in charge was too busy showing off all the "research" they did into alchemy, to be bothered with the actual story or characters. See also, all the questions that could have been answered over the course of the last three episodes, but weren't.
Well, I do recall snickering when I last watched it. I do think they take the right tone with it...but it'll still be annoying. And still nothing compared to the episodes that immediately follow it.
