Where I rewatch Yugioh GX, Episode 57

So it looks to be about sunset, and then we see Pharaoh yawning, which lets out Daitokuji's soul; I guess the writers wanted to make sure that we remembered how much canon they're willing to violate for a quick buck. Case in point, Pharaoh bats the soul back down and swallows it once more. Seriously, the fuck? Oh, and we get to see Judai playing Fusion to bring out Shining Flare Wingman so that he can destroy Misawa's Water Dragon. Yep. Seriously, why exactly were they dueling? No idea. Misawa bullshits about how Judai's been polishing up on his dueling skills since he dueled the Kaiser, and how the evolution of Judai's deck should be complete, and then we get what has to be one of the most clumsy excuses for foreshadowing in the history of fiction. Yes Judai, I'm sure that your deck has new stages for it; heck, don't be surprised if some sparkly spirit just walks up to you and hands you your new cards for no good fucking reason. But I've said too much already. Blah blah blah, Shou comes running in to tell Judai that they've got trouble, Misawa asks what's going on, and we get another repetition of the running gag that dares not speak its name. Anyway, point being that Kaiser Ryou's next opponent has been decided, but we'll have to wait til after the opening animation to find out that it's Edo Phoenix.
TITLE SCREEN! THE KAISER VS. EDO! BATTLE IN THE PRO LEAGUE seriously, these writers really don't know how to handle tension, do they?
So everyone's at the Osiris Red dorm, talking about the upcoming match. Blah blah blah, Edo couldn't even beat Judai, but he wasn't using his real deck, which he will use against Kaiser Ryou, and what the fuck is wrong with Misawa's eyes in this shot? Christ, even the animators are hating on Misawa. A scene with Napoleon and Chronos, which I will describe since I'm contractually obligated to. Napoleon's arguing with someone on the phone, wanting to get Edo Phoenix to destroy Osiris Red, Chronos doesn't really care, blah blah blah, good god this scene is tedious and pointless. It certainly doesn't help that Napoleon is both painful to look at and to listen to. Now we're at a restaurant, helpfully labeled "Restrants". Kaiser Ryou walks out of it with some dude in a suit, who talks about how they expect big things from Ryou. He is apparently Kaiser Ryou's sponsor and his victories in the Pro Leagues will boost their image. Basically, an "As You Know, Bob" conversation. Kaiser Ryou says he'll do his best, Man in Suit offers him a ride, but Kaiser Ryou declines so that the next plot point can be set up. And for some reason the Man in Suit takes out a newspaper and asks if that's Ryou on the cover, and the picture is of a winged outline against the moon. Again, really painfully clumsy foreshadowing. They may as well have just stamped it "plot device"...hell, maybe they did. Of course the print is way too tiny to read.
So Kaiser Ryou's walking down the street, wondering what kind of Deck Edo Phoenix will use against him, and honestly if Edo Phoenix is supposed to be this super genius duelist, you'd think his deck would be common knowledge. I guess not. And then some guy screams from off screen. Ryou runs to the alleyway, some guy collapses, and a "mysterious voice" declares that his destiny has already been decided. Then he drops a bunch of cards on the fallen dude and walks away, and apparently he's got teleportation powers, since in the next shot he's completely gone despite the fact that this should not be possible. Also, Ryou should have been able to get a plenty good look at him as well. EDITING MOTHERFUCKERS, LEARN HOW TO DO IT! Ryou turns over Fallen Dude and asks if he's okay, Fallen Dude says something about "him" being a monster, and he has a hilarious beard besides. There's a bang sound, Ryou looks up, and he sees the Winged Figure from the headline, standing against the moon. And then it's gone. And then the police show up now that everything's over, and gasp, what is this? Our fallen victim is a card burglar! Seriously, A Card Burglar? And Kaiser Ryou wonders what the fuck.
Now we transition into the room with Mysterious White Robed Guy, and I've recently learned that the guy who does the voice of Mysterious White Robed Guy also does the voice for Admiral Aokiji in One Piece. He is seriously wasted here. Anyway, Mysterious White Robed Guy asks Edo why he doesn't give up these foolish games of his, Edo says they're not games to him, and why the fuck they're not facing each other as they talk, I've no idea. Mysterious White Robed Guy says Edo won't find the man he's looking for among the scoundrels, though he admits it could be a decent way for Edo to channel his anger. Oh, and he draws the Chariot. Again. Which means that Edo will win his duel against Kaiser Ryou, apparently. Also, thank you for eliminating any potential tension, I was worried for a moment that I might be able to emotionally invest myself in this pathetic excuse for an episode. Blah blah blah, Edo still insists he totally would have won against Judai if he hadn't been told to throw the match, Mysterious White Robed Guy insists that Judai is needed for Edo's growth, Edo says that he finds that hard to believe, even though all of his prior predictions have come true. Blah blah blah, Edo's goal is to dominate the Pro League and find "him". Oh, now you feel like being cryptic, do you? Blah blah blah, is the scene over yet? It is? Good!
So yeah, the broadcast for the duel between Kaiser Ryou and Edo Phoenix is about to begin, and everyone whose anyone is watching. And there are blimps and lines and merchandising and everything! You know, given all the noise and shit that we make in our culture over people throwing balls around and kicking them and what have you, this actually manages to feel grounded, unlike just about everything else in this show. And of course, Kaiser Ryou has a shit-ton of fangirls. Sorry ladies, he's already taken, and gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. And for some reason Manjoume gets all pissy about the fangirls, I really don't know why. Shou says that Ryou's won ten matches in a row, and now Edo's on the scene, and...his fangirls seem awful young, don't they? Seriously, why the fuck is Manjoume acting like this? I don't get it, I honestly don't get it. And now we've got our announcers, who will be doing their damnedest to hype this thing up. And while Kaiser Ryou's won ten out of ten matches, Edo Phoenix has won 30 out of 30. Ryou greets Edo and is very respectful, but Edo's sarcasm is already wearing thin on him, and so the duel begins.
Edo takes the first turn, everyone watches intently to find out what kind of Deck Edo will be using, and he summons...FEATHERMAN??? Needless to say, everyone makes a big production about how shocking this is, even Kaiser Ryou. Yes, Edo Phoenix says, he uses a Hero Deck just like Judai Yuki. Oh dear, looks like I'm going to have to send someone to start pulling out the writers toenails. Anyway, Edo sets two cards and ends his turn. Seriously, are we really supposed to buy that Edo managed to win 30 duels in a row, without using his real deck? I call bullshit. And now Ryou is smiling, presumably because he'll get to destroy the Elemental Heroes one last time, since he's already done it twice before. Kaiser Ryou takes his turn, summons Cyber Dragon, attacks, and Edo activates Drain Shield. But Ryou is ready for that, and plays the Quick-Spell Trap Booster, which lets him discard a card from his hand to activate a Trap Card in his hand, and the Trap is none other than Trap Jammer, which will negate and destroy Drain Shield. But, Edo is also prepared, and he activates his own Trap Jammer, discarding a card to negate Ryou's Trap Jammer in turn! Thus, Drain Shield goes uninterrupted, Cyber Dragon's attack is negated, and Edo gains 2100 life points. Huh, that was actually pretty good. You know, for this show.
EYECATCH!
Edo's turn, he plays Pot of Greed, and then he plays Fusion. Gee, let me guess, he's going to summon Flame Wingman, or Thunder Giant, or...Elemental Hero Phoenix Guy? It has 2100 attack points just like Flame Wingman, and it is plainly the shadowy outline that Ryou saw the night before. Shou is confused; isn't fusing Featherman and Burstlady supposed to summon Flame Wingeman? Well, according to Manjoume and Misawa, Elemental Heroes can be fused into many different monsters, even with the same combination. Thus, when you fuse Featherman and Burstlady, you can choose between Flame Wingman or Phoenix Guy. AND JUDAI HAD NO FUCKING CLUE???? SERIOUSLY, HOW FUCKING BRAINDEAD WOULD HE HAVE TO BE TO NOT REALIZE THAT ABOUT HIS OWN FUCKING DECK? And despite my earnest wishing, Manjoume does not rip Judai's head and start beating his body like a Pinata. And now back to the duel. Edo attacks with Phoenix guy, and it turns out Phoenix Guy can't be destroyed by battle, so boom goes Cyber Dragon. And then Edo sets a card to end his turn. Kaiser Ryou's turn, he plays Pot of Greed, which is about what you'd expect of this show. He plays Power Bond, and brings out Cyber Twin Dragon with double the attack points, or 5600. He attacks and does 3500 points of damage, and with Cyber Twin Dragon's effect, he can attack again. Big explosion, lots of smoke, and Edo has 100 life points left. Ryou demands to know what the fuck, and Edo points out his trap card that he activated before the second attack, Elemental Charge, which restored Edo's life points by 1000 for every Elemental Hero on his side of the field. And now, in accordance with Power Bond's effect, Ryou takes 2800 points of damage.
Now it is Edo's turn once more, and he summons Sparkman. Then he equips it with Spark Gun, and then the Quick-spell card Guard Penalty; during this turn, every time his opponent's monster shifts to defense position, he gets to draw a card. So he uses Spark Gun to switch Cyber Twin into defense position, draws a card, he switches Cyber Twin back to attack position, and then back into Defense position once more. Everyone thinks this is fucking hilarious, everyone except for Kaiser Ryou. Blah blah blah from the Peanut Gallery, Edo draws his second card from Guard Penalty's effect, and says that now he's going to go all out. He plays another Fusion, combining Phoenix Guy and Sparkman into Shining Phoenix Guy. Anyway, like Shining Flare Wingman, Shining Phoenix Guy gains 300 attack for every Elemental Hero he has in his grave, and since there are four, that raises Shining Phoenix Guy's attack power to 3700. He attacks and destroys Cyber Twin Dragon, sets one card, and ends his turn. Ryou declares that he'll win in the name of the Kaiser, and plays Fusion and Cybernetic Fusion Support to summon Cyber End Dragon at the cost of half his life points.
Everyone cheers, Kaiser Ryou declares his attack, and Edo says he'll give Ryou a piece of advice; If you get heated up and lose sight of yourself, you'll lose in the Pro League. And it would appear that Ryou did not notice Edo's face down card, which it turns out is the trap card Destiny Destroy; this lets him send five cards from his deck to his grave, so he chooses Clayman, Edgeman, Wildman, Bubbleman, and Hero Signal; what, no Necro-Darkman? Anyway, the point is that this boosts Shining Phoenix Guy's attack power by another 1200 points, which lets it destroy Cyber End Dragon for 900 points of damage, which means Edo wins, just like Mysterious White Robed Guy predicted he would. Edo tells Ryou that his destiny was decided before the duel had even begun, Ryou remembers back to the previous night, and everyone is acting all shocked and horrified, way way WAY out of proportion to Kaiser Ryou's defeat. I mean, the way the show's going on about it, you'd think something had been on the line in that duel. End Episode.
NEXT TIME! Blah blah blah, Judai and Edo are going to duel. EPISODE TITLE, VS. EDO (PART 1) E-HEROES VS. E-HEROES. And the card of the week is Cyber End Dragon...which just got it's ass kicked. Seriously, is there no coordination here at all?
Well, that wasn't as dire as previous episodes, but it was just so goddamn clumsy, the writing was akin to a herd of elephants in terms of its subtlety.

Date: 2010-07-07 12:30 am (UTC)So yeah, the broadcast for the duel between Kaiser Ryou and Edo Phoenix is about to begin, and everyone whose anyone is watching. You know...you're right. Holographic monsters battling is more exciting than chasing a ball around anyway, even I'd bother watching sports now and then if they were like that.
Yes, he's taken, even if the writers keep forgetting his significant other. Seriously, how can they keep forgetting Fubuki's existence like this? He's basically their best character and yet he almost never shows up.
Juudai is an idiot. I mean really, how are we supposed to be impressed by a protagonist who doesn't even know the ins and outs of his own deck?
Edo's sarcasm is just very grating. I love sarcastic characters (*glomps Sokka*), but Edo just...is so bland that he's more annoying than anything else so far.
Seriously, where in the world is Fubuki? It's not even like they can just say he's watching somewhere else, he loves crowds, of course he'd be in the main room. It just rings of such lack of thought. He basically dotes on Asuka, so he should be with her much more often, too. If they were going to neglect a character, couldn't it be someone annoying like Shou instead?
Maybe they're surprised that he lost in such an anticlimactic duel? For the first loss of the undefeated, 'perfect' Kaiser Ryou, this just wasn't a very exciting or interesting duel.

Date: 2010-07-07 12:53 am (UTC)I mean, yeah, in reality, you'd need to change the rules a bit, five minutes of card game playing wouldn't be enough, but the giant holographic monsters are perfectly good opiates of the masses damn it!
Personally? I think the writers hate happiness and joy. And since Fubuki is the manifestation of happiness and joy...
I know! I mean, I'm all for plucky determination (<3 Luffy), but this is just fucking ridiculous!
Yeah, Edo right now really is pretty damn bland. Give him a few episodes, he gets a bit better. Or maybe I'm just remembering through rose colored glasses...
I know! The interplay between Asuka and Fubuki is just wonderful and so very different from the usual younger sister/older brother dynamic you get in shonen anime, so why don't they play that up more? Because they are morons. And yeah, Shou can fall in a hole for all I care.
Yeah, I mean, most of the damage, Ryou did to himself, and they really needed to establish some sort of stake to the duel, because really, the spectacle of the giant hologram monsters can only entertain for so long.

Date: 2010-07-07 02:28 am (UTC)Exactly!
You know...you just may be right. Certainly they hate our happiness and joy...
We'll see, I guess?
It's so annoying, to see this really interesting stuff in the background and know that it could be the focus of the series, instead. Asuka: still has my vote for main character. I have this vision of Asuka as the main character, with Fubuki and Ryou in supporting positions, and it shall never come to be.
There's nothing wrong with exploring the Kaiser finally losing a match, since, after all, everyone loses at some point, but at least make it impressive!

Date: 2010-07-07 02:37 am (UTC)And our happiness and joy, is the only happiness and joy that matters!
Man, I've got to tell you, if I hadn't been high on the GX Manga, where Judai is a good character, I totally would have gone ahead and had Asuka be the star of my fic...hell, sometimes I think she is anyway!
Now, just as a matter of curiosity, what would have made the duel more "impressive"? Better animation, higher stakes, different cards? Just trying to see what pages we're on, so to speak.
no subject
Date: 2010-07-07 02:50 am (UTC)Hehe. But they also hate quality in general, it seems- would explain why they religiously avoid it whenever it sneaks into the series.
Hee! In your fic Asuka and Juudai are basically co-stars, which is good too!
Mainly? Higher stakes and an opponent with better presence. I don't care too much about animation unless it's genuinely awful- remember, I'm still used to the animation of the early 90s, my standards are different (honestly, I think it's silly to complain about animation quality in a long-running series; they don't have the time or budget for Ghibli-quality animation and never will, let it go). Better composition of the duel, too. Back in Battle City, the strategies were interesting and clearly presented enough that they could be impressive even to those not very interested in dueling, and it's something which GX really lacks.

Date: 2010-07-07 02:58 am (UTC)Yep, that's what I was going for! And I think you'll be pleased by how it all ends at the very end.
Yeah, I'm remembering stuff like Malik's Five-card God Combo with Osiris, Ryota's Sea Stealth, Rishid's traps and Sekhmet...but in GX, they're so eager to get everything over and done with so quick, that there's rarely any time to get a good tempo or pattern set up. And yes, definitely better tension and attachment to the characters is a huge plus too.
