Recap of last episode, woo.

EPISODE TITLE, WHITE NIGHT DRAGON! JUDAI VS. ASUKA (PART 2) what's next, the burmese guardian?

Yeah yeah, Judai's in dire straits and freezing cold, Asuka spells out her combo once more, and everyone's all in despair that Judai won't be able to play the all important Fusion card. Judai needlessly elaborates on how the 1100 attack power Snow Sprite is the lynchpin of Asuka's strategy, and so he summons Card Gunner, activating its effect; he can send up to three cards from his deck to the grave, increasing Card Gunner's attack power by 500 for each one, until the end phase. Judai sends H-Heated Heart, Necrodarkman, and Hippy Space Hummingbird to the grave, giving Card Gunner a total attack power of 1900. He attacks and destroys Snow Sprite for 800 damage, so now he can activate Pot of Greed. Then O-Oversoul to bring back Sparkman in defense, and then he equips him with Spark Gun, letting him switch Card Gunner to defense position. Thus, he narrowly escapes being killed by his own desperate attempt to activate a spell card. More noise from the peanut gallery, more antics between Fubuki and Manjoume, and Shou and Kenzan act like they're better than that, like the raging hypocrites that they are.

Asuka's turn, she draws White Veil, and now she activates her trap card Call of the Living Dead...wait, she had that on the field on her first turn; she could have used that on her last turn to bring back Illusion Ice Statue, copy White Night's Queen's attack power, and attacked directly to win. Ow, ow, my head, why does my head hurt so much? Oh, right, incredibly terrible duel choreography. Seriously, it seems like every other episode I'm finding a mistake like this, and it's virtually always in the same direction, so that Judai will win. You know, if Judai were to win because he was honestly a more skilled player than his opponent, that would be one thing; sure, I'd still be annoyed at how he wins all the time, but genuine skill can at least be respected. This blatant rigging in his favor? No respect possible. And we know that this isn't on purpose, because no one calls her out on this. Seriously, it is near impossible to enjoy anything on this show. By the way, even if she couldn't get the attack power from its effect, it would have kept Judai from being able to attack her Snow Sprite, which would have kept him from being able to use his spell cards, which means he would have lost anyway. Seriously, there's no way to escape that Asuka has been robbed, big time.

Where was I? Oh, right, Asuka activates Call of the Living Dead and brings back Snow Sprite, which means that Judai's spells will be sealed until he destroys it again on his next turn. And then she uses White Night's Queen to destroy Judai's useless Negate Attack, and I swear if this sets him up to use Bubbleman's anime effect, I will scream. Blah blah blah, more noise from the peanut gallery, lots of noise from the peanut gallery that would have shot the pacing all to hell if this episode had any pacing in the first place, and now back to the duel. Asuka attacks and destroys both of Judai's monsters, leaving him with nothing on the field. Oh, and when Card Gunner is destroyed it lets Judai draw a card. Judai goes on about how Asuka's totally different and isn't leaving him any opening. Oh hey, he didn't summon Bubbleman. I do not have as much cause to rage as I would have. He just summons Dandelion in defense, and ends his turn, since he can't use traps and any spells he sets will just be destroyed. Asuka laughs at how pathetic Judai is, and takes her turn. She summons Cold Sleeper, which also has 1100 attack points, has it attack and destroy Dandelion, its effect activates to special summon two fluff tokens in defense, so Asuka attacks and destroys them both. Asuka says he's just delaying the inevitable, Judai says it's not over 'till it's over, blah blah blah, and oh hey, excruciatingly terrible music cue; fitting, since this duel should have been long over by this point.

More blah blah blah, and Judai says Tanoshii, take a drink. Judai draws his card, and uses the effect of Necrodarkman that he oh so conveniently sent to the grave through Card Gunners effect, and summons Neos, like he would have summoned the also perfectly valid Edgeman. So he attacks and destroys Snow Sprite for 1400 damage, leaving her with 1300 life points, same as Judai, noise from the peanut gallery, and Fubuki warns everyone it won't be that simple. Asuka now reveals that with Cold Sleeper on the field, she can give up a monster zone to special summon a monster that was destroyed by battle at the end of the battle phase. Boy, if only Judai could asspull a quick spell that he could use during the battle phase...oh wait, he can! He has Quick Summon, which he uses to summon yet another technique monster, Card Blocker; technically, Judai used Quick Summon back in episode 86, the one so dull that I had to skip it, but it still reeks of convenience to me. Anyway, now Asuka activates Cold Sleeper's effect to bring back Snow Sprite in defense position. Also, she can't change its battle position. Judai ends his turn without comment.

EYECATCH!

Asuka takes her turn, and sacrifices both White Night's Queen and Cold Sleeper to summon Blue-Ice White Night's Dragon. Oh hai, I c whut u did thar. Also, she really would have been better off keeping White Night's Queen instead of Snow Sprite, as I'll get into in a moment. Uh, Judai, considering the stakes in this duel, both Asuka's free will and the safety of the world, maybe now is not the right time to be excited that your opponent has just summoned a great big 3000 attack power beast. Next, she plays the Permanent spell card, White Blizzard; from now on, whenever she destroys a monster by battle, the opponent takes 600 points of damage, and if it gets destroyed, you have to destroy another one of your cards. And now she equips White Night's Dragon with White Veil...though I'm not sure why, Judai's not going to be setting any cards any time soon, so it's effect is going to go unused. I guess its supposed to be symbolic, but really its just stupid. Plus, White Night's Dragon already has the effect of negating spell and trap cards that target it, so again, what's the point? Oh, and as Fubuki explains, if Judai attacks any other monster, like say Snow Sprite, Asuka can just destroy one of her spell or trap cards to force Judai to attack White Night's Dragon. Thus, he are screwed. Asuka declares that she'll attack Neos with White Night's Dragon, but Judai activates the effect of Card Blocker, forcing Asuka to attack it instead.

You know, if Asuka had kept White Night's Queen instead of Snow Sprite, she could have gone ahead and had the Queen destroy Card Blocker, which would have left White Night's Dragon free to destroy Neos, and with White Blizzard's effect, that would have done 1700 points of damage to Judai, winning her the duel and making his ability to activate spell cards on his next turn moot. So that's twice now that Asuka could have easily won, but did not. What do you want to bet that the writers will pull a hat trick, and have Asuka forgo victory for the third time in a row? And now it occurs to me; Judai could have noticed all these misplays, and realized that deep down, Asuka is struggling against the double-plus strong brainwashing she's been subjected to, and is sabotaging her duel so that Judai can win. That would actually have been interesting, and would have allowed Asuka to be really awesome, even in this narrative. But of course, the writers are blind to such possibilities, since that would take away the glory from Judai. Pricks.

In any event, Judai still takes 600 damage from White Blizzard's effect. And now Asuka sets her remaining card on the field, so that she can use it for White Night's Dragon's effect without giving up any of the rest of her combo. Yet more noise from the peanut gallery, Asuka wonders how the heck Judai plans on getting out of this one. Again, under the "Asuka is fighting back deep down" plan, this would have been Asuka's way of testing Judai, preparing him for his final battle with Saiou, who won't be pulling any punches like her. Unfortunately, nothing like that is taking place. Fubuki says that Judai hasn't given up, like that means anything, and then Judai redundantly says what Fubuki just said. Judai draws his card, and then declares that he'll be borrowing Manjoume and Fubuki's strength once more. Yes, he'll be removing Ojama Black and Swing of Reminiscence to special summon Spell Striker. Two things; one, in the real card game you don't remove any two cards from your grave, you just remove one spell card. And second, Judai was just being nice; he could have just gone for his own spells and monsters, which he had plenty of in his grave, for the summon of Spell Striker. So no, neither Manjoume nor Fubuki's cards made any significant impact on the outcome of this duel. By the way, Spell Striker has just 600 attack points. Then Judai summons Armor Breaker, and what is with all these cards he's pulling out of his ass? Shouldn't he be using his Neo-spacians or his E-Heroes? Whatever, the duel's as rigged as any professional wrestling match, so it makes no difference. And now Armor Breaker equips itself to Spell Striker, and Spell Striker activates its effect to attack directly.

This should not have worked. Here is how White Night Dragon's effect text reads in the anime: "Negate and destroy effect of your opponent's spell and trap cards that target this card. By destroying one spell or trap card on your side of the field and sending it to the graveyard, you can change the attack target of an opponent's monster to this card." Thus, it doesn't matter that Judai was going to attack directly, Asuka still would have been able to activate White Night's Dragon's effect, sent her spell card to the grave, and forced Spell Striker to attack White Night's Dragon. Appealing to the real world effect that would have let Judai pull this trick off is no good, because the real world version of White Night's Dragon wasn't released until well into 5Ds. For reasons that I won't go into now, this wouldn't have immediately lost Judai the duel right then and there, but it would have kept him from being able to win. So that's three times now that Asuka should have won, but didn't. Judai, wipe that grin off your face, you should have lost so many times by this point its not even the least little bit funny. More antics in the peanut gallery, and all the annoyances are beginning to get to Asuka despite all her brainwashing. And now Judai applies Armor Breaker's effect; since Spell Striker just did battle damage, Armor Breaker will let him destroy an equip spell card on the field; actually, it would let him destroy any card, but as we've established, the duel composition on this episode is extraordinarily terrible.

So Judai destroys White Veil instead of White Night's Dragon because he's an idiot, and now Judai switches Neos to defense to end his turn. You know, it's awful convenient that he hasn't been drawing a bunch of spell or trap cards when they wouldn't be able to do him any good, now isn't it? Asuka is super pissed about her White Veil being destroyed, the Peanut Gallery flinches, and they're all shocked at how uncool Asuka is being, just because White Veil, which did nothing and would do nothing even if it had stuck around, had been destroyed. Really, the writers just threw it in there without thinking about it, the same way that they do with everything else on this show. Oh, and Fubuki is now way back in the seats, for he is most familiar with what to do when his sister gets scary. Asuka takes her turn, plays Cyclone to destroy Armor Breaker, and now she attacks Spell Striker. It is destroyed, but of course it has the ultra convenient effect of not taking battle damage. Needless to say, Asuka should have just ignored Spell Striker and destroyed Neos like she tried to do last turn, which would have kept Judai from being able to win. Which makes four times that Judai should have lost, one time that he should have won, so on the balance, a solid hat trick of Asuka being screwed over like she usually is. White Blizzard's effect still applies, so Judai's down to 100 life points.

Yet more noise from the peanut gallery, because lord knows building momentum would just wreck this episode, Judai spouts some idiotic banter about Asuka actually being warm, and then draws his card, what is now the only card in his hand. It is of course exactly the card that he needs, Hippy Space Flare Scarab. He summons it, Contact Fusion, out comes Flare Neos. Asuka has three cards in her spell/trap zone, so that raises Flare Neos's attack power from 2500 to 3700, which means it can attack and destroy White Night's Dragon for 700 damage, which will win Judai the duel. And since Judai will already be targeting White Night's Dragon, Asuka can't use its effect to get rid of a spell card to weaken Flare Neos and win her the duel. Again, all of this could have been prevented if Asuka had just destroyed Neos on her last turn like she should have. And now Judai acts like a total ass, asking if Asuka's scared and that ever since being brainwashed by Saiou she's no longer fun or cool, and Asuka tells him to shut the hell up. Seriously, what kind of hero insults someone who's obviously been heavily brainwashed? The Judai kind, that's what. Manjoume thinks that Asuka yelling at Judai is very hot, Judai spouts some drivel about how there's always daybreak with the sunrise, which again runs directly counter to the supposed "Light bad, Dark good" theme of this season, but it's not like the writers ever bothered to work this theme in any capacity anyway. Blah blah blah, stare-down, and Judai finally declares his attack, and apparently all the hot-blooded feelings will be transferred through this attack and awaken Asuka's icy heart.

You know, I've got to wonder what Judai would have done if Asuka had gone for a fire theme? Meh, it's not like it matters in the least. Judai wins, and the Association of Light duelists who are in the stands are unsurprisingly subdued, given that, you know, there's no point to them being there in the first place. Ah, Asuka looks so peaceful; I think she's dreaming about being in the GX manga, where even though she could be doing better, her treatment is a lot better. Not to mention there are other women for her to interact with for a change. Judai walks up and decides to be raging hypocrite as he calls Asuka a Late-riser solely for the purpose of pissing her off. Because she's his friend. Asuka yells at him, saying that next time she'll win. Even if there were a next time, which there wont' be, Manjoume isn't allowed to beat Judai and he's the rival proper, so what chance does Asuka, the resident Ms. Fanservice, stand? None whatsoever, even though we've established that Asuka should have won that duel many times over. Judai helps Asuka back up, Manjoume squirms with jealousy, and Fubuki rubs salt into Manjoume's wound without thinking anything of it. Judai says he's sure glad Asuka's back to normal, but the real enemy is still out there. Note how, one, Judai ignores the fact that Misawa's still brainwashed, and two, will still take no initiative in fighting Saiou, even though he's just declared that he's the real enemy.

And now over in the White Dorm, Saiou laughs like Dr. Claw, declaring that he'll get Judai next time. Next time! And then Saiou realizes that he forgot to feed the cat and it ran away. Edo looks down at his key, having apparently spent all day on his boat, Judai declares that the real battle is still ahead, and everyone nods along like they're going to be allowed to do anything. Of course, since anyone else making even the least bit progress against Saiou would steal Judai's thunder, no such thing will happen. End episode.

NEXT TIME! Oh hey, Shou's going to duel Hell Kaiser Ryou. They try to act like this is some big destined battle that we should care about, but I know I don't. EPISODE TITLE, HONORLESS BROTHER DUEL, RYOU VS. SHOU. card of the week is white night's dragon, which as i mentioned above, will not be released until well into 5Ds.

As compared to the Judai vs. White Manjoume episode...it didn't have the obnoxious Ojama cards, Judai briefly playing Ojama Black aside...but the duel composition is far, far worse. Some of the worst duel composition on the show. Heck, just thought of another fail point; if Asuka hadn't set Stray Lambs in the first place, Judai wouldn't have been able to win with Flare Neos. So that's five times Asuka should have won, but didn't. Wow, this was a terrible duel in damn near every respect.
