Gary Stu and you, a formal test.

On a whim, I went to the Original Fiction Mary-Sue Litmus Test (found here, http://www.ponylandpress.com/ms-test.html), and put Yuugi from Yugioh, Judai from Yugioh GX, and Yusei from Yugioh 5Ds through it. The results?
Yuugi: 40, which marks him as a Gary-Stu.
Judai: 75, which marks him as an Irredeemable-Stu
Yusei: 79, same as Judai.
Now, I've never cared much for these sorts of tests, as the answers are all in isolation without any sort of context, and the scale on the scores is just really incredibly strict, you can have maybe one or two significant traits on the character before it starts calling it a sue/stu. But even so, I think that these results are rather telling. And this is just on the universal test, I'm pretty sure that if I were to find a more specific test, like one for Anime in general, or even the Yugioh franchise in particular, the results would be even more glaring. Just a bit of fluff for thought.

Date: 2010-12-01 11:04 am (UTC)Though, I'm wondering how you decided to check boxes? For instance, on a lark I did Malik and then two original characters (all got less than 20), and skipped over any counts which are standard to anime/manga. Such as the good looks, perfect hair...everyone in manga is pretty, after all ^^; Amusingly, my original character with a ridiculously angsty past scored, I think seven, probably because he did become a terrible terrible person as a result.
I did Juudai and he just got a 37. Hmm. Tried again and was less picky about skipping anime/manga tropes, got 58. Wow, how much did you check to get in the 70s?

Date: 2010-12-01 06:03 pm (UTC)I wasn't picky about skipping Genre Tropes, I think it's just a matter of me having seen the whole series, and therefore being able to check off more boxes than you. Hint; the ones about unusual eye colors being plot significant? Oh god, yes, in just a few episodes, this will apply.

Though on an amusing side note, my original characters are almost always marked "not sue enough."

Now, to me, that makes me worry that you're characters could be boring or uninteresting.

Date: 2010-12-02 05:19 am (UTC)Plus, there are genre considerations to consider. At a lot of tests seemed aimed at fantasy, especially shonen fantasy. I don't daydream a lot of that.
Though i took the test you linked and it gave me 35 (Borderline Sue), so either my memory is bad, this test is stricter, or I am admitting to more stueish traits than before.
