cypsiman2: babies making the future (Magiranger)

Six thousand years ago the Daos Empire was torn apart in warfare between the Dai tribe and the Gohma tribe. In the present day, the remnants of the Gohma have begun reasserting themselves and their schemes to conquer the world. To stop their evil ambitions, the mysterious martial artist Kaku gathered five young people with high Qi-levels to become the Dairangers and fight!

Gosei Sentai Dairanger is a heavily Chinese martial arts themed series with each character practicing a distinct martial art, the uniforms looking like martial arts uniforms, the red ranger's dragon mech is able to transform into a very light and agile staff fighter while the combination mech is patterned after a Chinese warrior and so on and so forth. Also, the main three villains wear leather bondage gear. Interesting.

Gosei Sentai Dairanger has also not been completely subbed so for the last fifteen episodes I can only glean the more obvious plot points.

Character focus and development in Dairanger is very even, aided by the fact that each character is given their own individual recurring plotline throughout the series. Furthermore, the sixth ranger of the team is a unique one in the franchise; he is nine-and-a-half year old Kou who gains an adult body when he transforms into Kiba Ranger with the help of his talking sword ByakkoKen. Oh, and he has a crush on the sole female member of the team Lin, which he expresses by groping her chest or flipping up her skirt...and then complaining to her face about how small her breasts are, or that her granny-panties are not sexy at all. It is that sheer audacity that makes Kou's antics amusing as opposed to annoying, and it is balanced by the fact that he's also a tragic character who has been forcibly separated from his mother and misses her dearly. Ultimately Lin's plot line becomes tied up with Kou's and I would argue that together they are the most important characters on the show.

The plot is overall well put together and has some nice twists and turns to it...and one plot twist that just completely baffles me, not just that it doesn't make any sense, but it doesn't even seem to have any real point to it, it doesn't add anything to the show so I'm left completely puzzled as to what it's doing there at all.

In summation it's a very good show, and I just wish that the whole series were subbed so that I could enjoy it even more.
