Chapter ten opens with Jounouchi noticing that a God has just been summoned, and falsely guesses that it was Yuugi. Then we see Yakou Tenma standing in front of Anzu in her capsule, which is glowing as madly declares that with this energy the project has reached the next phase. We then shift back to the duel in action where Yakou Tenma(?) has just summoned The Wicked Dreadroot, the second of the Evil Gods, and even after The Other Yuugi equips Valkyrion with Lightning Blade it still can't stand against the evil god's aura of terror that cuts its attack in half. The OtherYuugi pulls a combo to send to the grave and special summon back from it, The Sun Dragon Ra, but Tenma is prepared with a trap that, since he has a god on the field, keeps The Other Yuugi from summoning a god in turn. Mr. Croquet, observing the duel, notes that Pegasus called Tenma his perfect duelist out of all the duelists he raised. Tenma then plays a special card, Divine Evolution, which permanently raises the attack power of a God by 1000 points.
Chapter Eleven, The other Yuugi responds with a combo that brings out King, Queen, and Jack's Knight to the field and fuses them together into Arcana Knight Joker. One trap to negate The Wicked Dreadroot's effect, and a spell to raise Arcana Knight Joker's attack power, and The Other Yuugi defeats the Evil God! However, Croquet rushes up and declares that Tenma is in no condition to finish the duel and gives The Other Yuugi the victory. Then Tenma appears on a nearby screen and explains that the man that Yuugi had been dueling was Gekko Tenma(!), his twin brother born a few minutes before him; he had used the power of the Evil Gods to take over his brother's body and force him to do his bidding. With this, Yakou then explains that because The Wicked Dreadroot had done battle, enough Mystic Energy had been released to separate Anzu Gardner's (LOL, the really funny thing is that an earlier panel on the same page correctly identifies her as Anzu Mazaki, LOL) soul from her body. Thus, she can now serve as an empty vessel to bear Pegasus's soul, and fulfill Project RA, Rebirth of Avatar!
Gekko, who opposes his brother despite wanting to see Pegasus again himself, gives The Other Yuugi Anzu's soul card, which he places on his duel disc. She appears and rushes right through The Other Yuugi before realizing her condition. Anzu thanks Yuugi for coming to save her in a rather casual manner. The Other Yuugi exclaims a promise to save Anzu, and she pats him on the shoulder, telling him to stop freaking out, be a man, and pull it together; well, she says all that, but her hand passes through his shoulder, and the two stand silently together, noting how close and yet how far they are from each other. The final scene for the chapter is Seto and Mokuba flying back to Domino City in their Jet, and not the dumb Blue-Eyes White Dragon jet from the anime, just a jet with a fancy paint job thank you very much.
I will take this moment to note how very nice it is to have Anzu back in the story. It is very, very nice.
Chapters Twelve and Thirteen feature Jounouchi dueling a card professor named Mendo Cino, who is quite the arrogant jerk; notably, Jounouchi summons The Legendary Fisherman and Jinzo, and uses Sword and Shield along with Time Machine and Stop Defense to achieve victory. Its a fun duel, but not one I really feel like going into detail over. Then we see Seto and Mokuba fly by, and a solid vision dragon attacks them, so Seto gets on top of his jet and summons the Blue Eyes to destroy it. He then lands on the roof of the building and is confronted by a Card Professor who wants to see if his White-Horned Dragon can defeat him, and informs Seto that the only way back into Kaiba Corp is through him. That ends chapter thirteen.
Chapter Fourteen, we get a flashback to America, where Seto and Mokuba are observing some young duelists; Seto is notably disapointed by their low level performance and contemplates setting up a training facility for duelists (if not for the GX manga, I'd be going WRYYYYYYYY!!!! But I'm okay now.) Then all the duel discs fail, Yakou appears before Seto and taunts him, then disappears. Seto declares his intent to return to Japan, and notes that Yakou is acting completely different from the last time he saw him. Back in the present, the Card Professor is identified by Seto as Willa Mette, a high ranking member of the Card Professor's Guild. Seto says he has no time to duel him, but Willa says that Yakou Tenma might decide to destroy the duel ring server. Enraged, Seto begins the duel in earnest, which goes for the rest of chapter fourteen and continues onto fifteen.
Willa seals Seto's Shrink-Crush Card combo and summons the White Horned Dragon, which absorbs the Blue-Eyes White Dragon's attack and adds it to his own. However, Seto uses a combo to copy White-Horned Dragon's power and crushes him. Then it is revealed that Mokuba hacked the lock and Seto declares the duel was just a warm up for him. So yeah, both Kaiba brothers got a chance to kick ass in these chapters.
Chapter 16, Yakou appears before Seto again and they chat for a bit; Yakou tries to play similar back-story sympathy, but Seto isn't buying it. He then turns things around by saying that Yakou used to be a shy, quiet person who hid behind Gekko's back. Yakou freaks, renews his vow of vendetta against Yuugi, and leaves. We then shift over to Yuugi, Anzu, and Gekko; Gekko explains about how after Pegasus disappeared, Yakou began to research the mystic power of the Millennium Items and the God Cards and used this research to create The Evil God cards. Their curse shattered Yakou's psyche, leaving him the crazed madman that we know him as today. Yuugi then demands to know why Anzu was chosen as the vessel, and Gekko explains the criteria Yakou used; it had to be someone who was physically and mentally healthy (One look at Anzu tells you she's plenty healthy...I apologize for that), it couldn't be a duelist, since their fighting instinct would make it too difficult to separate their body from their soul, (I can accept that, Anzu can duel but that's not really her nature), and third it had to be someone whose possession would inflict pain on Yuugi (Anzu's presence here requires no explanation).
Anzu then demands to know why Yakou wants revenge against Yuugi, since he wasn't responsible for Pegasus's disappearance. Gekko then explains that Keith "Bandit" Howard was the one who said that Yuugi had killed Pegasus, and Keith himself makes his appearance. He mocks Yuugi for "getting worked up over some chick", and when called on his lie he seems confused but decides he doesn't give two shits about the truth. He then brings out Ted Benias to duel Yuugi, and while Yuugi is prepard to duel on his other self's behalf, since the other Yuugi is exhausted from all the previous duels that day and is still in shock about Anzu, but Gekko steps forward to face Ted, wanting to help in the battle against Yakou. Despite the proclamations of perfection, Gekko's dueling leaves something to be desired but it is clear that he is preparing something big, especially when he declares no monsters in his hand despite having five cards in his hand.
So, I'd say this volume is a definite step-up; we're getting better plot and characterization, and the art seems to pulling together a bit; the eyes only seem to be crazy when they're supposed to be at the least. I'm liking this, and on its own merits to boot.

Date: 2009-12-11 05:39 pm (UTC)Yugioh R is also nice, as it helps me to escape from what is currently being done to Yugioh; seriously, what did Yugioh ever do to Konami and NAS to deserve this these days? I don't know, I just don't know.

Date: 2009-12-12 12:19 am (UTC)I'm not.
Yusei (The main character) gets a letter in the mail and goes of to Crashtown, which is...somewhere, I can't even begin to figure out where you're going to get a desert in Japan, maybe my geography knowledge is really bad or something but I doubt it...anyway he goes there to rescue an old friend of his, who has given up on life. The town is being run by a pair of families who are fighting for the rights to all the gold in them thar hills.
Oh, and there is a woman who turns out to be a traitorous whore and she betrays Yusei despite being the one who brought him in, even though their side already had a super-duelist who could have ended the feud already but they don't use him for...some reason, and the whole thing ends up dragging out far longer than is reasonable.
Also, it turns out you can pick advanced electric shock collars with a small bent nail. Good to know!
