Where I watch episode two of Simoun

Okay, so our episode picks up where the last one left off, with Neville jumping down a bottomless pit and Aeru flying off by herself to fend off the enemy aircraft. Interestingly enough, one of the enemy craft has a camera taking pictures of the Simoun as it comes in for the attack. The others who are watching this call Aeru an idiot; apparently the Simoun she's piloting is only a quasi-simoun created by devilish means and thus cannot draw the Remergion trails.
Title Screen.
We are now watching Neville flying around unaided, tracing lines of light behind her; this is Mergion, which is the power of the body and soul that lets one pilot the Simoun and produce Remergion, if I'm making the proper inferences. Simula Erie shows up with a pink dress on, lamenting that this will be the last time she sees something so beautiful. Meanwhile, Aeru decides that just ramming into the enemy works pretty well too, and as she destroys each enemy aircraft, one of the leaders asks the other where she found this crazy hot-blooded blond girl. She was a volunteer, unsurprisingly enough. Also, Aeru manages to trace out the Jade Remergion line using the smoke from the exploded enemy aircraft, the same line that Neville was drawing. Paraid confronts her about this, saying she went out of her way to show off without thinking of how that would make Neville feel. And Aeru had no idea she was making a Remergion of any sort.
After a brief shock at this, Paraid explains to Aeru that flying in the Simoun is called praying to the sky, not a sortie. Several of the younger looking Simula approach Aeru and tell her who Neville is, and Aeru decides that she wants to be in a pair with her. One of the younger pilots, I don't recall her name but I believe she was mean to the little green haired girl last episode, she says that she wants to be in a pair with Aeru and that she thinks that she's fallen in love with Aeru. Aeru does not care and wants to find Neville.
As Erie watches Neville get changed, she reminisces about the first time they met, and how she still likes to take care of Neville. Neville notices her dress and asks her if she's leaving the ship. Erie says yes, and that her 19th birthday passed long ago. She's scared though, so she wants Neville to go with her to the spring. Neville accepts. Meanwhile, as Aeru searches for Neville, two other Simula try to provide a tour, but Aeru isn't listening to them. Then we get a confrontation between Paraid and Neville, where the latter reveals that she might go into the spring as well, but she hasn't decided yet. Aeru then shows up and says that's no good, going into Tempus Patieum to become a Man or a Woman, and after Paraid and Neville ask who she is, she introduces herself, asking to become a Pair with Neville. She then goes on about how the Simoun pilots are neither Man nor Woman, and if Neville goes into the spring, they won't be able to be a pair.
Glasses-girl, again I don't recall her name, says that she never stood a chance of being Neville's partner to begin with, and while Neville says that she turned 19 over a year ago, Paraid says that the country still needs her. Still, Neville is able to convince Paraid to let her go, and in this close on her face, her eyes look really weird to me, I don't have the words to describe it, but it's only a little bit off putting anyhow.
CHALK PASTEL!
EXPOSITION TIME!
Okay, as you know bob, everyone is born a woman, but Tempus Patieum decrees that half of the people have to be male for society to function, so when you turn 19 you go to the spring and choose your gender. But the Simoun Simula, who defend the nation from foreign invasion, can defer this for as long as they like. Aeru says that so long as she can pilot the Simoun and fight in the war, she doesn't need to go to the spring. She asks if the others believe the same thing, and at least two of them don't, saying that going to the spring is part of becoming an adult, and it is only that their power as Simula is needed right now. Aeru then asks if that means everyone else has decided whether they will be a man or a woman. Glasses-girl looks perturbed when the question is directed at her.
SCREEN CATCH!
Okay, second half of the episode. And if nobody minds, I'm going to try and summarize things a bit, as I've already spent an hour composing this post, so I'd like be done already so that we can discuss the episode. Aeru continues to ask Neville to be her pair and ends up accompanying Neville and Erie so that she can show them her 'Auriga', which is the upper pilot seat on the Simoun, meaning Charioteer. Neville agrees, Aeru fishes for compliments, Neville becomes surprised to find that this is Aeru's first time in a real Simoun. Neville has a flashback to last episode where everything went horribly wrong, and a brief conversation about the war. After landing, Aeru stays behind to wait for Neville to come back, and Erie calls Aeru rude for making Neville sit in the lower seat.
There's a conversation back at the base, everyone will be 19 soon enough, but Paraid insists that she still has things that she needs to do. Now we're on a train with Neville and Aeru, and I notice that the front of the train has the same sea-shell design that the Simoun have. LESBIAN POWERED TRAINS! Anyway, the people on the train want Neville to hear their prayers, while Erie expresses her uncertainty about whether to be a Man or a Woman. Neville flashes back to when she first met Amuria, and of course they kiss.
CHALK PASTEL DRAWING OF VILLAGE!
Cost cutting measures abound as the next minute or so has little to no animation. But it's okay, it's still all very pretty to look at, as is the music to listen to. Neville and Erie arrive at the spring barefoot, and it is very beautiful, and obviously quite old. Erie still hasn't decided between being a Man and being a Woman, but a creepy looking woman, referred to as Onashia, calls her forward anyway to pray in the spring. Erie disrobes and enters the water, and we get an instrumental version of the opening theme. Shortly thereafter Erie is surrounded by a bright light, and we get to see spiral patterns like DNA. After that, Erie says that her name is now Erif, that her voice will grow deeper and her breasts will become smaller. And while they say that nothing will truly change, 'Erif' falls to her knees and cries her heart out.
Meanwhile, back at the ship, Simula Rodreamon says that she'll be staying, since everyone always wanted her to be a Simula and she can't disappoint them now. Sunset, Neville goes back to Aeru, and kisses her. Aeru asks her about the spring, and Neville says that she changed her mind. Then at Neville's request they both fly up high above the main ship base.
ENDING CREDITS.
Next episode, Distant War.
Well, Aeru definitely seems to believe that she's the main character of a Shonen Series; hopefully they will do something interesting with this. More of the setting has become clear to me, and given Erie's reaction after visiting the Spring, this is definitely not the peaceful and idyllic society that it would like to appear to be. I'm definitely hooked now, and am looking forward to unearthing the mysteries of this world and just Tempus Patieum really is and why it would put together a set-up like this.
