So this episode opens up with helicopters and ships making their way across the ocean to deliver something of great importance to Duel Academia.
TITLE SCREEN, A QUINTUPLE COMBINATION! VWXYZ i wonder if this has any connection to xyz dragon cannon?
Judai is asleep, as per usual, while Shou is praying to an icon of Osiris the Sky Dragon that he might pass his monthly test and get promoted to Ra Yellow. It seems a bit early in the series to be running this plotline, but let's run with it, it's not like we have any choice in the matter. Then the alarm clock begins to ring, and even though its right next to Judai's head he sleeps right through it. Shou tries to shake Judai awake, and he gets punched in the face for his trouble. Needless to say, Judai will not be apologizing for this at all. Then Hayato tells Shou not to be so soft since he'll be competing against his fellow Osiris Red classmates. Shou tries to wake Judai up again, but gives up and runs out, and trips onto his face.
TRANSITION EFFECT! Judai is now running along, yelling at himself for being late; he should seriously head on over to the nurse's office, see if he can't get something for that Narcolepsy of his. Anyway, he runs past a middle aged lady trying to push her truck up the hill, so he stops and turns back to help her; gee, that's so nice of him, I wonder he'll get some beneficial laser guided karma out of this? Also, he and the lady are pushing on the side of the truck; wouldn't it make more sense to push on the rear?
Classroom, everyone's taking their written exam, and Shou is falling asleep; Judai chastises Shou for falling asleep after studying all night, and Manjoume tells them to shut the hell up. As Judai goes to pick his sheet up, Asuka and Misawa think how rude and insolent Judai is being, especially considering his skills in dueling. Close up of a rather nasty look on Asuka's face, and Judai has now fallen back asleep. Seriously, Narcolepsy is a medical condition, you shouldn't laugh it off like that, the way Professor Chronos is.
Oh, and those helicopters and boats from earlier have landed now, and we get an announcement that the practical skills exam will be taking place at 2:00 PM at the gymnasium, so everyone runs out of the testing rooms, except for Judai, Shou, and Misawa, since Misawa stays behind to wake them back up. Judai continues to be a little snot by saying that the written exam doesn't matter, and Shou wonders where everyone ran off to. Misawa explains that the new rare card shipment is about to come in.
Yes, that's right, the navy has been brought in to deliver cards; rare, but otherwise perfectly ordinary cards. It makes you wonder what they would do with actually plot significant cards; probably seal them under the school and and lock the mystic seals with seven magic golden that can only be used after defeating the bearer of one of the aforementioned keys in a duel. No, wait, that would be silly.
Oh, and all the rare cards are sold the instant they get into the shop, before any of the students can actually buy them. The buyer is Professor in an absolutely terrible paper-thin disguise that fools everyone. Then Judai and Shou up well after everyone else had left, and there's only one booster pack left. Judai offers to let Shou have the last pack, there is dithering, and then the lady from before shows up, and her name is Tome. She says she has something very nice for the boys, and we'll leave it at that.
Manjoume and his minions are walking along, still stupidly not seeing through Chronos's poor disguise, even after he comes up to them and makes a pitiful attempt at disguising his voice. Chronos makes an unreveal, Manjoume refers to him as the guy who lost to Judai, and Chronos says he wants Manjoume to duel Judai. Manjoume points out that the test is between duelists in the same dorm, but Chronos says he'll take care of that, and of course he'll give Manjoume all the rare cards he wants, because actually having any confidence would be the mark of someone not being a caricature of a schoolyard bully.
FLASH! Judai wonders why he's dueling Manjoume, and Chronos explains that since Judai did so well in the Entrance Exam, it wouldn't be fair for him to duel a fellow Osiris Red duelist; thus, Manjoume as his opponent. And Judai is promised that if he does win, he'll be promoted to Ra Yellow. And of course, Judai accepts because he wants to duel everyone and never turns down a challenge. Oh, and Misawa lampshades how ridiculously quickly Judai is moving up the ranks, which doesn't make it any more tolerable. Oh, and we get the first of what will be a running gag of Judai addressing Manjoume as just "Manjoume", while Manjoume yells at him "Manjoume-san". It's an honorific thing. So Judai topdecks Winged Kuriboh for the third time in four duels and summons Elemental Hero Clayman in defense position, which for some reason elicits shock reactions from everyone.
EYECATCH! Manjoume insults Judai's deck and starts his turn, activating the rare card The Mallet of Luck, AKA Magical Mallet, which allows him to shuffle it and any other unwanted cards in his hand back into his deck and draw an equal number of cards. As you would expect, you can't use the real Magical Mallet to shuffle itself back into the deck. So he sends four cards in his hand back to his deck and draws Magical Mallet again, this time just sending one other card in his hand to his deck, drawing two new cards. Satisfied by his hand, he summons V-Tiger Jet in attack position, then activates the permanent spell card Frontline Base; now he can special summon a level four monster from his hand once per turn, so he summons W-Wing Catapult in attack position. Now with both monsters on the field, he can fuse them together into VW-Tiger Catapult with 2000 attack points.
Next he activates its effect, discarding a card to switch Clayman into attack position, and then he attacks for 1200 points of damage. He sets a card to end his turn while Chronos gushes over how impressive Manjoume is. Judai is not shaken, of course, and summons Elemental Hero Sparkman in defense position and sets a card to end his turn. Misawa says that Judai has no choice but to go on the defensive, while Asuka thinks that this isn't all Judai's got. Manjoume's turn, and he summons X-Head Cannon and uses Frontline Base to special summon Z-Metal Catapult, then activates his face-down Call of the Living Dead to bring back the card he discarded last turn, Y-Dragon Head. So he fuses X, Y, and Z into XYZ-Dragon Cannon. Then he declares that he'll fuse VW and XYZ into one monster; we get a disappointingly short Voltron sequence as VWXYZ Dragon Catapult Canon appears on the field. Its a pretty ugly Voltron ripoff, but you can't argue with results; In addition to having 3000 attack points, once per turn it can remove an opponent's card from play, which he uses to get rid of Sparkman, and Chronos gushes.
Manjoume declares his attack, so Judai activates his trap card, A Hero Appears; now Manjoume has to pick a random card from Judai's hand, and if it's a monster, he can special summon it to the field. A repeat of the Manjoume-san gag, and Judai ends up bringing out Burst Lady in defense position, but it turns out that when V-Z attacks, Manjoume can change the target's battle position. So Judai ends up taking 1800 points of damage. Manjoume declares Judai without hope, Judai says he'll believe in his deck, and we get a quick flashback to that 'something nice' that Tome was talking about; what do you know, she managed to swipe a single rare pack for Judai in thanks for helping her earlier. Winged Kuriboh starts chirping and so Judai summons him in defense position and sets the rare card he just drew. Oh, and all the girls in attendance squee over how cute Winged Kuriboh is, and Judai, being an idiot, will never take advantage of this.
Shou despairs that Judai is out of options, while Asuka realizes that Winged Kuriboh is his option. Manjoume attempts to remove Winged Kuriboh from play, thus skipping its effect, and Judai activates his facedown card Evolutionary Wings, AKA Transcendent Wings; by discarding two cards, he can sacrifice Winged Kuriboh and special summon Winged Kuriboh Level 10 from his deck, which is Winged Kuriboh with a snazzy dragon helmet and much bigger, fancier wings. He activates its effect, sacrificing it to destroy Manjoume's monster and dealing damage equal to the destroyed monster's attack power, in this case 3000. Manjoume is forced to end his turn in the face of Judai's incredibly convenient card.
Seriously, what were the freaking odds that the rare card he'd get would be support for a unique card that he happened to get from freaking Yuugi Mutou? Plot contrivance, away!
So Judai draws his card, and lo, it is Elemental Hero Featherman, with 1000 attack points, exactly what he needed to win. What are the odds? Everyone cheers Judai on, Professor Chronos is sadface, and Principal Samejima takes an inordinate amount of pleasure in being biased towards Judai against Chronos. Principal Samejima then gets on the PA system and lavishes praise on Judai so that we don't miss what a swell guy Judai is and says that he'll be promoted to Ra Yellow, even though he tanked on the written exam.
SPOILER ALERT! Judai stays in Osiris Red, because he doesn't want to leave Shou and Hayato behind, and besides he never wants to leave Osiris Red. The foregone nature of this conclusion really deflates the heartwarming effect the writers were going for. Maybe if Judai did advance to Ra Yellow but said he'd always make time for his best friends...
NEXT TIME! Something about an abandoned dorm and Judai dueling a masked man. The episode title is "Demon Deck of Darkness". I prefer "Doomy Doomness of Doom Deck" myself, but that might just be the Invader Zim fan in me talking.
So what was the point of this episode? That studying is a waste of time, and Judai is great. Truly wonderful values to instill into the viewing audience, don't you think?
