According to rottentomatoes.com, "The Last Airbender" has a freshness rating of 7%, and even the "fresh" reviews, are not very good. Meanwhile, "Eclipse" has a freshness rating of 51%. And some time back, M. Night Shyamalan said that the first "Twilight" movie was his favorite movie of that year. (See here http://blog.reelloop.com/9552/news/night-shyamalan-expresses-interest-breaking-dawn-big-fan-twilight/)
So, the question becomes, did M. Night Shyamalan deliberately go out of his way to create a racist, sexist, and all around terrible movie, in a perverse desire to make sure that "Eclipse" would be number one at the box office this weekend? It's certainly worth a moment of thought. BUT, only a moment of thought.

Date: 2010-07-02 03:16 pm (UTC)Actually, I am kind of torn. On one hand I dislike pretty much everything about this movie and am glad to see none of its "justifications" work out...on the other hand, this is what average people are going to associate with the franchise. Not the awesome show, but the bad movie. Not to mention, since media executive types seem to think that live action movies are the pinnacle of art, I wonder if this failure will hurt chances to continue the Avatar franchise.

Date: 2010-07-02 03:24 pm (UTC)That does suck, big time. I would have loved for there to be a kick-ass movie adaptation that respected the source material, but quite frankly I had no hope from the beginning; even before M. Night Shyamalan was brought in, the fact that it was to be Live-Action was enough to convince me that this was going to be nothing but suck. Unfortunately, I was right.
All we can hope for is that the failure of the movie does not adversely effect the upcoming Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

Date: 2010-07-02 04:13 pm (UTC)Plus, I always felt many of the show's visuals would be hard to translate into live action.
On the note of public opinion, I have been reading reviews (first off, I was expecting bad, but not that bad...), while Ebert's and reviews from geeky corners of the internet have blasted the movie for its stupid changes, a lot of the mainstream reviews take potshots at the show (or at least what they think the show is like based off the movie and assumptions about kid's shows), and seem willing to blame many of the movie's failings off the fact it was based off a kid's show.
Korra should be too far along in production to be affected, but anything after that...
